October 7, 2015

A documentary that won a major award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and a dramatic comedy by French director Francois Ozon, will feature at the Weekend Film Series on Sunday October 11.

MERU, screening at 3 p.m., won the audience award in the U.S. documentary category at Sundance.

Called “the best mountain climbing film since Touching the Void” by the Boston Herald, it features renowned alpinists Conrad Anker and Jimmy Chin as they attempt to be the first to climb the 21,000 foot Shark’s Fin on Mount Meru in Northern India.

After falling 100 metres short of the elusive summit in 2008, they return to try again. MERU is the story of that journey, an expedition through nature’s harshest elements and one’s own complicated inner demons – and ultimately on to greater new heights.

Screening at 5.15 p.m., The New Girlfriend is a wildly entertaining mix of melodrama, mischievous humour and suspense. It won ‘Best Film’ at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain.

French heartthrob Romain Duris stars as David, who is mourning the death of his wife, Laura. When her best friend, Claire [Anais Demoustier], drops by David’s house to see how he is coping, she finds him caring for his newborn child while dressed head-to-toe in his late wife’s clothes.

As she spends more time with David, Claire becomes seduced by his beautiful new incarnation. As the two become inseparable, Claire wonders whether she is falling for David’s alter ego, or perhaps a part of Laura’s resurrected soul.

With its gentle humour and depth of feeling, this is a film full of charm, wit, and emotional power.

Tickets are on sale now at the Oceans Gift Shop, BUEI, or by calling 294-0204.
