October 23, 2015

Bermuda’s Jessica Lewis has just won her semi-final heat in the 100m at the 2015 IPC World Championships taking place in Qatar, crossing the line in a time of 17.76 to qualify for the finals.

Samantha Kinghorn from the UK placed second, Ilana Dupont of Canada was third, Keiko Konishi from Japan placed fourth, Jill Moore from the USA placed fifth and Jessica Rogers from the USA placed sixth.

Lewis, who placed 4th in the 200m finals yesterday, will go into the finals strongly positioned, as the 100m is her strongest race and she comes into the finals with the third fastest qualifying time.

China’s Lisha Huang — the world record holder who raced in another semi-final heat — had the fastest qualifying time, with Turkey’s Hamide Kurt with the second, while Ms Lewis recorded the third fastest qualifying time of all athletes in both semi-finals.

Bermuda has never before won an IPC World Championships medal, and the broadcast commentator commended Ms Lewis for her strong race and said that “Bermuda may win its first ever IPC World Championships medal”. The 100m finals will take place tomorrow in Doha, Qatar.
