October 1, 2015

[Updated with video] A serious traffic collision took place in Paget a short while ago this morning [Oct 1], which the police said resulted in two men being trapped in a vehicle.

Police Media Manager Dwayne Caines said, “There has been a serious traffic collision in the Rural Hill and the South Road area of Paget. Motorists are advised to use Harbour Road at this time.

“Ten persons from Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service are on the scene, as well as ambulance and police personnel, as they undertake a complicated extraction process using the ‘jaws of life.”

“It appears that a truck was on South Road when a van collided with the truck, resulting in the two men being trapped. The men are being extracted at this time and traffic is being diverted.”

Update 2.01pm: Video of the Police and BFRS statement below, they said the extraction took approximately 40 minutes to complete as it was a “very difficult extraction” as the vehicles were “completely entangled.”

The BFRS said, “Upon arrival, we found two vehicles, one truck and one van that were severely entangled. The extrication took approximately 40 minutes to complete.

“It was a very, very difficult extrication as both vehicles were completely entangled. The operations commenced by having to stabilize the vehicles, and we had to separate both vehicles in an effort to get both of the casualties out.”

Update 4.33pm: Bermuda Fire Service spokesperson Sergeant Russann Francis said, “At approximately 10:58 am this morning, Thursday, October 1, 2015, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to a report of a road traffic collision on South Shore Road in Paget just west of the Trimingham Hill roundabout.

“The Fire Service responded to a road traffic collision where an intermediate van collided into the rear of a stationary dump truck. As a result, 2 male passengers were trapped in the van and were subsequently extricated by Fire Service personnel using a variety of hydraulic tools and equipment.

“The two vehicles became entangled on collision which made the extrication extremely difficult.

“The Fire Service responded to the incident with four vehicles and ten personnel from both our western and central stations. I would like to acknowledge the efforts of the firefighters on scene as they performed extremely well under very difficult circumstances.

“After being extricated, both male passengers were transported to KEMH via ambulance.”

Just wondering if the tracks are wide enough right there to have allowed smaller vehicles to pass through instead of everyone being diverted to Harbor Road. Traffic was horrendous because of this.

That being said, I’m happy that both men survived. I do wonder if this was due to driver error because the dump truck was stationary as it was there for road work.
