Government, Private Schools Closed On Monday

October 4, 2015

[Updated] Saltus, BHS, Warwick Academy, Somersfield, MSA and Bermuda Institute will all be closed tomorrow [Mon, Oct 5] due to Hurricane Joaquin.

Speaking on behalf of the schools, Saltus Grammar School Deputy Head Jon Beard, said: “The Principals have been in contact with each other and agree that in light of the impending storm our best and safest course of action is to close for Monday.

“This will enable work crews and BELCO to be able to work easier without school traffic, enable parents to clear up after any damage, and allow the schools to assess their situation to ensure that students can return to a safe environment.

  1. Family Man says:

A perfect example of how to be organized, think through a problem and take proactive action.

Government bureaucrats are still dithering about what to do after the storm passes in the middle of the night.

This is why there’s such a difference in educational standards between private and government schooling.

    • Coffee says:

I agree , the minister is waiting for the senator to make the decision for him .

    • Portia says:

I think that, for the most part, Government has tried to be on the ball with this storm. You have to remember that Government answers to the taxpayers- private schools don’t. A principal of a private school only has to think about the school, so they have sole discretion whether to close the school or not. Government has to think about and coordinate ALL workers and departments at the same time in preparation for the storm, as well as the hospital, the airport, mobilizing the regiment, etc. So it may not be done as quickly, but they are trying to get it done in time.

The EMO website is just priceless. The most recent post on there is dated Jan 25, 2015. The “headlines” on there are all from October 2014.

Ditching that website might save a few dollars, without adversely affecting services to the public.

    • Terry says:

Nothing to do with “educational standards”.

But the rest of your comments are not far off the mark.

      Hunker down.

  2. You are 100% correct.

    • Just to be sure says:

So will the Bermuda college be closed as well?

  3. Intelligence Prevails says:

Great example set my these private schools. Government should be so wise.

  4. Bernews if possible could we get any information on business closures for tomorrow. I did smile when all private schools made their announcement before Government.

I thought what a joke, Government still behind in the times, we see a hurricane coming as close to us as it is, and even though it is not on a direct path at us, we will be greatly impacted, with high winds, which could result in down trees and loss of electricity.

Oh but I for got all of them and the America’s cups all have back up generators, maybe , just maybe that was part of the 70 million, you know my speculation, I don’t care less, they are always prepared, that is the joy of living off the backs of hard working middle and lower class citizens.

    • Zevon says:

You are truly such an idiot.

    • Toodle-oo says:

You did yourself no favours by continuing to type beyond your 1st sentence .

  5. Should keep them open…tellum…”See that?…..don’t dooooo that!

  6. Coffee says:

Again will the minister wait for the union to make the decision ?

  7. rhonda says:

Especially with all the Facebook posting, criticizing the delay in making the decision, once again the private schools leading the way. However it is a Good thing oba followed this time.

  8. Terry says:

well apparently the power is still on.
Never read so many stupid comments in my cave man life.

    Turn the power off BELCO.
