BTA: Tourism Businesses Open Year-Round

November 3, 2015

The Bermuda Tourism Authority [BTA] said they are helping local tourism businesses get the word out that they’re open year-round.

Over the next couple of weeks video messages will circulate on social media with one common theme: “We’re open”. The messages began today with the hashtag #BDA365.

“Many tourism businesses close their doors and shutter the windows when the clock falls back,” said Glenn Jones, the BTA’s director of public and stakeholder relations.

“We want to reverse that trend so we’re highlighting and celebrating those who stay open year-round. Maybe these messages and the great weather we’re having right now will inspire others to open their doors as well.”

The BTA said, “The BTA unveiled its new Uncover the Arts brochure which touts Bermuda as a destination for all seasons with intimate and unique experiences. In all there are about 50 activities across the island in the brochure. Eighteen of them are new. There is something to do every day of the week.

“In a soon to post message, Kamilah Cannonier of Sweet Saak says, “We’re open year-round because it’s always the perfect time for baking. And even though you may be just visiting, we’ll always make it feel like home.”

“Farmer Tom Wadson, Hamilton Town Crier Ed Christopher and Heather Nicholds of Blue Sky Flights are a few others recording similar messages that will be shared on social media.

“In addition to the Uncover the Arts brochure, the BTA has created an adventure almanac to help visitors better understand what kinds of adventure activities Bermuda offers year-round.

“Created with the assistance of the Bermuda Weather Service, the almanac shows the average air and water temperature each month of the year and recommends adventure activities by season.

“Meantime, the BTA partnered with members of the Bermuda Hotel Association on a new promotional offer that encourages travelers to gain a free hotel night in Bermuda at the same time they gain an extra hour on the clock. The promotion is specifically for travel during the winter season.”

Mr Jones said: “With the adventure almanac, the new ‘gain an hour, get a night’ hotel special and increased air capacity from December to March we have an opportunity to grow demand and reduce the seasonality that stymies growth in the tourism economy.

“When these visitors arrive the industry must provide quality experiences or we’ll ruin our changes to grow shoulder season demand in the future.”

“Tourism industry stakeholders can join in on spreading the word by first opening their doors and then sharing their year-round message and the messages of others on social media using #BDA365,” the BTA added.

“Reducing seasonality is an objective of the National Tourism Plan.”

Visitors avoid Bermuda during off season due to the impression that it is COLD here.. By putting the ‘Average Temp’ you are not helping your cause.. January will likely see at least 15 day’s of high temp’s above 70 degrees, the impression you have given is that it will not reach over 65 degrees at any time. (That’s how the regular persons look at this) Just sayin.

Receiving bonuses if you increase tourism should be a part of the national tourism plan and not given when tourism is still declining. Backwards.

If I was an America’s cup person I would be worried about the fact that kite surfing season ends in May.

Last time I checked, visitors cannot obtain a spearfishing or lobster license. Why is the BTA continuing to promote activities the visitors can’t legally participate in? Should visitors ever be allowed to spearfish and noose lobsters?
