Internet Security Classes On November 15 & 21

November 7, 2015

With 28 years of experience in the technology field, including more than 10 working with the Bermuda Police Service, Edwin Cannonier will be offering a two-part internet security class in November, teaching computer users how to protect themselves while online.

The classes will be held on November 15 and November 21 at the Chamber of Commerce from 10.00am to 11.30am. Registration for the class costs $75, with both students and adults welcome to attend, and proceeds will be donated to charity.

When asked why internet security should be important to everyday users, Mr. Cannonier cited “scams such as the Microsoft scam where people were contacted and swindled out of hard earned money, and viruses that cripple your computer, stealing resources and siphoning off information.”

Mr. Cannonier told Bernews, “Today, most everyone has a computer or tablet and uses them frequently on the internet. The course that is being offered is to ensure that individuals are better equipped to use the internet as safely as possible.

“This course will help to bring a better understanding to the students on how breaches occur and how to be best equipped to avoid the attacks of programs and people. This is a beginner’s course, so it is very informative and light so as not to confuse but enlighten. Courses with deeper content will be offered through the community service programs.”

The classes follow a recent warning by the Bermuda Police Service of a possible scam involving a caller claiming to be an employee of a company called Windows Ltd, saying that the public should “remain vigilant regarding phone calls, e-mails and other correspondence from unknown persons that attempt to obtain personal information or other sensitive data.”
