Malware Emails Targeting BELCO Customers

November 9, 2015

BELCO has advised that malware emails are circulating targeting BELCO customers, with the email coming from “billerz@belco.bm” and claiming that the receiver’s current bill is attached, payment is overdue and that service will be disconnected.

The company said it is “critical” that receivers do not open the attachment as it will be malware that can cause additional computer problems.

A spokesperson said, “BELCO is advising customers that malware emails are currently circulating locally using the @belco.bm domain, targeting BELCO customers. The malware email comes from billerz@belco.bm and advises that the receiver’s current bill is attached, payment is overdue and that service will be disconnected.

“It is vital that customers always check the sender’s email address, as it is anticipated additional fictitious addresses may be used moving forward. Any billing-related emails coming from any email address other than ebilladmin@belco.bm should be ignored and deleted immediately.

“Further, it is critical that receivers do not open the attachment as it will be malware that can lock files and cause additional computer problems.

“Anyone who is unsure of their current billing status can check their account information by accessing the BELCO customer portal onwww.belco.bm or by calling BELCO’s Customer Service Department at 299.2800.

“We are working diligently to address the problem.”
