Cartel Land & Chi-Raq Films To Screen At Series

A documentary film that was recently nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary, and acclaimed director Spike Lee’s latest feature film, are to screen at the Weekend Film Series on Sunday January 17.

Cartel Land, by director Matthew Heineman, is one of five films to receive an Oscar nomination in the documentary category.

It is a no-holds barred look at the journeys of two modern-day vigilante groups and their shared enemy—the murderous Mexican drug cartels.

Charismatic Dr Jose Mireles leads the Autodefensas, a citizen uprising against the Knights Templar drug cartel in the state of Michoacan. On the US side of the border, small paramilitary group Arizona Border Recon operates in a desert corridor known as “Cocaine Alley”.

Aside from its Oscar recognition, the film won directing and cinematography awards at the Sundance Film Festival.

Chi-Raq, by Mr Lee, features an all-star cast including Nick Cannon, Jennifer Hudson, Angela Bassett, Teyonah Paris, Wesley Snipes, Samuel L Jackson, John Cusack and Dave Chappelle.

The film, a searing satire of gun violence in America, tells the story of women on both sides of the gang divide in Chicago who swear off sex with their men until the violence stops.

The films will screen in the Tradewinds Auditorium of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, Cartel Land at 3pm and Chi-Raq at 515pm. Both films are rated ‘R’.
