Seminar: Implications Of Fire Safety Legislation
Wide-ranging implications of new fire safety legislation on commercial property will come under the spotlight during a seminar organised by a fire protection company.
Air Care is holding an event later this month in conjunction with the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute which will involve a presentation on the effects of the Fire Safety Act.
According to Brendan Stones, Air Care’s General Manager, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service will have new power to promote protection and fire safety during all stages of a building’s design and construction.
“There is no doubt that the Act has the potential to have a significant impact on all commercial buildings and landlords really should make themselves aware of what they might have to do in order to comply,” said Mr Stones.
The Act adopts as law the National Fire Protection Association standards and codes of practice and it covers all commercial buildings ranging from office blocks to shelters for the homeless to storage places.
In addition, any new buildings will have to comply with the new standards before it can be issued with a fire certificate, which will need renewing every five years.
Mr Stones added: “The Fire Service will give a presentation on the new Act which, I think, will be invaluable to commercial property owners. The new Act is all encompassing and is excellent in terms of improving safety.”
The event will take place on January 26 and as well as the Fire Safety Act seminar, some of Air Care’s overseas partners will be on hand to talk about fire safety systems.
Mr Stones added: “Air Care is probably best known as Bermuda’s premier HVAC service provider but we also have a Fire Safety division which provides Fire Alarm and Fire Pump and Sprinkler testing and maintenance services for Bermuda businesses and together with our partner, Troy Life and Fire Safety Ltd., we are able to provide full installation of Fire Sprinkler and Alarm systems.
“With the new fire code that will likely be enacted this year we are taking a proactive approach to fire safety which is why we have also invited the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service along to this event to provide additional information.”
