BII Highlights Career Pathways Program Students

February 23, 2016

As part of the first annual Insurance Careers Month, the Bermuda Insurance Institute [BII] is shining the spotlight on local students who are taking steps to get a head start in the industry.

One of those students is Berkeley Institute pupil Imani Smith, who is just a few months away from completing an Associates in General Insurance [AINS] designation through the Career Pathways program, run by BII in partnership with the Department of Education,

A spokesperson said, “Imani will be the first student to complete the two year program in insurance, which was introduced just over two years ago.

“Imani wanted to participate in the program as she sees it as a stepping stone to help her enter the insurance industry, which is her ultimate career goal. Sometimes she finds some of the study materials challenging as there can be a lot to learn, but she also finds it very rewarding as the information is interesting.

“Funded and supported by the insurance industry, the program is designed to provide students with knowledge about the insurance industry in Bermuda, give them an opportunity to earn an internationally recognized insurance designation as well as provide work release opportunities within the industry at BII member companies.

“The program has rigorous entry criteria. Students must be in S3, S4 or equivalent, have a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA, have no lower than a C grade in GCSE Math and English, and be recommended by their school.

“Prospective students are interviewed by BII staff members. As a large part of the program involves balancing regular school work with self-study, only students who display the aptitude to complete the curriculum are considered.

“Imani began the program in January 2015 and is due to finish this June, which is also when she will be graduating high school. She plans to attend university in the UK and study business economics and financial mathematics.

“Imani said that it is an excellent program, not only for the designation, but also for the skills she is developing, such as the self-discipline to keep focused and motivated. These are attributes that will benefit it her at university and beyond.”

“The three-tiered program includes an interactive Insurance Induction Program, where students are given an overview of the Bermuda insurance market; Day Release where students get the opportunity to experience the insurance industry by attending day release once a week for four weeks at an on-island insurance, reinsurance and/or captive management company; and the internationally recognized AINS [Associate in General Insurance] designation.”

Ms. Smith said, “I have to be focused and driven. It’s about motivating myself and prioritizing long-term goals over a social life, but I like the things I’m learning.

“It’s been a challenge balancing my school workload and studying independently. Dr. Walker [BII CEO] is always available to answer questions or clarify something. She keeps me motivated and can arrange for tutors if needed.”

Dr. Dawnnelle Walker added, “The Bermuda Insurance Institute is pleased to partner with the Ministry of Education to provide exposure, knowledge and an internationally recognized designation to local high school students.

“The insurance industry is a key pillar of our economy and our young people are the future of our country. At the BII, we see this program as a win/win.”
