BBC News: Premier ‘Let The Healing Begin’

March 31, 2016

[Written by Gary Moreno, Bermuda Broadcasting Co.]

In the aftermath of the anti Pathways To Status protest, which laid bare raw emotions particularly as they relate to race, Premier Michael Dunkley is urging that the healing process be allowed to take place.

The Premier says he is prepared to play his part in effecting necessary change.

“I will continue to think and reach out to people with a renewed commitment to improve and heal some of the challenges we have, to do better,” he told us in an interview.

The Premier says he recognizes the issues at hand and wants to move forward: “My door is always open and I’ll be out there in the community to give people easier access so we can deal with these issues.

“We are out here on an island, all by ourselves, so we have to do it together, getting as many people involved as we can, or else we’ll continue to struggle and no one wants that.”

Note: Bernews is temporarily helping Bermuda Broadcasting Company by sharing its stories online. The station’s TV equipment is undergoing repair after being hit by lightning.

  1. Unnaceptable says:

This guy is a joke. He loves a camera and always talks warm and fuzzy, but then he’s the one who lets Fahy have his way with immigration and Bob have his way with the Airport.

Premier stop with the platitudes, if you really care about “healing” get rid of the person who is causing the rift: Michael Fahy.

If all you want to do is talk and not act save us all the trouble and keep the photo-ops to a minimum – as we don’t believe your words anymore.

    • Onion says:

Serious question: Have you actually read all that Fahy has said about Immigration? If so, point out exactly what he has said that offends you.

      • frak says:

        everything

      • Unnaceptable says:

Just like the poster below. Everything!

        Take care of Bermudians first!

        • mixitup says:

          I third it…. EVERYTHING!!

          • Its me again says:

            Fourth it

            • alsys says:

So you have an issue with Bermudians born into families that have Bermudian status but due to a quirk in the law, dont have have status themselves?

Or, how about you name one thing that actually in it. Saying “everything” makes me think you haven’t even bothered to read it all…

      • The Original Truth™ says:

After numerous request to meet with the minister he gets his junior minister to contact me. His junior minister goes back to ask him the questions I have about things I heard about his immigration plans. The junior minister gets back to me and say’s Fahy has no such plans. Months later Fahy makes a statement about going ahead with the exact plans Sylvan denied him having.

Offense #1 Me having to try to reach out to him over months without any response back.

Offense #2 Not even getting back to me at the end and instead having his junior minister do it for him.

Offense #3 Having his junior minister lie to me for him.

Fahy thinks he’s some sort of monarchy and doesn’t get that he is not. He was elected for by the people for the people and is a servant of the people. His actions clearly show his arrogance and show his favoritism to a select group of people. Just look at the way he interacts with those who support his views and how his mannerism changes around them opposed to those who do not agree with him.

If OBA wants to win the next election they need to rid themselves of Fahy. He has been the minister who acts like Ewart forcing his agenda. Just as Ewart was the downfall of PLP Fahy will be the downfall of OBA. Premier Dunkley needs to get a backbone and send him packing because it won’t be long until Fahy gets on his high horse again and starts dictating and causing dismay in the people.

This is coming from someone who has always voted for UBP and voted for OBA in the last election. Next election will be the first time I vote for PLP if Fahy is still around. I don’t have much hope in Bean but Burt has his head on straight I don’t agree on everything he has put forth but most make sense so hopefully he takes over. I am tired of having the obnoxious dicktator fahy in our government.

        • lowe says:

          That’s such an honest post.

        • Earth watch police says:

Man you must be large numerous requests to meet the minister.Do some work hire some Bermudians and stop moaning.

    • Hurricane says:

Look how the mighty have fallen. You sound like a desperate little man. My people will not trust/vote for you next time Milky. Not with Hurricane Fahy being the face of the OBA.

He already made his constant storms for the OBA with the people. Look how that turned out for you with a week a protest.

    • Raymond Ray says:

@ “Unnaceptable” You’re as bias as “they” come :-( Now had the shoe been on the Progressive Labour Parties foot your views would be contrary.
Since they (O.B.A.) can’t find $800:000 that the former P.L.P. Government misplaced, by the way that was / is one of the reasons Bermudians are faced with a huge National debt. The One Bermuda Alliance needed to go out and borrow more monies to keep the boat from sinking :-(

      • Dread says:

Raymond Ray please stop flogging a dead horse. The OBA PROMISED to fix the problem and now realize that they have bitten off more then they can chew. IF their was more collaboration between the OBA,Unions and the PLP without racism ,bullying and greed getting in the way, then, and then only, will Bermuda progress!!

        • Raymond Ray says:

@ Dread. Yes, the One Bermuda Alliance has / do promise to fix many things / problems. You should also know that, “Rome wasn’t built in a day”
Look at what has been accomplished thus-far and all the new business we witness Island-wide. There is far-more hope today than there was when the Progressive Labour Party where the Government…And that’s a fact!

      • why tho says:

Someone likes to blow smoke out their a$$. OBA hasn’t pushed any policies for Bermudians. Race politics is even stronger now thanks to the OBA.

      • drunken ursula says:

You’re as bias as they Ray what gull…. never get over yourself man.

        • Raymond Ray says:

@ drunken ursula and all the others that don’t favour me nor my opinion/s. I speak the truth, you and all the “others” have a real problem/s “dealing with it / them”

    • Betty Boop says:

Oh shut up! I love looking at him, so handsome, go get em Michael

  2. jrsmith says:

good cop, bad cop situation going on with these guys. just be straight with the people, dont care for all these mixed signals from the govt…

    • Unnaceptable says:

      Thank you!

That’s what I’m trying to say, this guy wants to play nice, but keeps the people in place who do Bermudians dirty.

      • To UNACCEPTABLE:: You are correct. What healing needs to take place comes from Dunkley and Fehy.
They need to HEAL THEMSELVES alone, then present clear, honest goals to the Bermudians of this country.
Whatever has been PROMISED to such arrogant foreigners…… they need to go back from whence they have come. Totally unfair and racist practices, to say the least!!

        • little girl says:

This response is unbelievable to read in this day and age Arrogant foreigners, who may they be?Are these the people that have been here 30 -40 years that have fuelled your pension ,have paid Bermudians rents and helped with their morgages, bought from Bermudian supermarkets and generally helped keep the economy going etc ?
How arrogant of you @have some backbone that thinks you do not need these people .What world do you live in ..you have obviously never been outside of Bermuda . We NEED PEOPLE FROM OUTSIDE FULL STOP !!

          • Raymond Ray says:

“have some backbone” needs to stop hiding behind a B.S. name and sign his birth given name to his critical “letters”. Where do the $ come from if not for the foreigners? Either you’re too dumb to understand economics or just a youngster that supports the P.L.P. :-(

            • The Original Truth™ says:

Hey Ray! Since you think you understand economics so well why don’t you explain to us what the definition of remittances is. There’s over 10 million of that going out of Bermuda yearly and it isn’t being sent out by Bermudians.

Are you too naive to understand that not all expats are created equally and some take more than they give. We need the giving kind here like we had before. The others need to find another place to use for building their mansion back home. Even if you give these type status they will still leave once they’ve had their fill.

              • Raymond Ray says:

Economic in this case is, “money making money. Yes, many people have / will take their dollars back “home”, it’s theirs…Why can’t they when they’ve earned them dollars? A clever person works and saves a percentage of their wages so they can have something in the future; why are some Bermudians so damn bias towards them? They’ve only taken advantage of an opportunity when it had looked them in the face :-(

                • The Original Truth™ says:

Now I really know you’re too dumb to understand economics. Ironic you accuse others of it. Remittances is not what they take with them it’s what they send back while still working to send back more. If they are going to send large portions of their money back then they are not contributing what a Bermudian would contribute. They are the ones who are bias towards Bermuda and rather help their own country even when Bermuda is the one helping them.

              • Honest Abe says:

@The Original Truth™: You want the “giving kind” of expats but you want them to not be able to call this place home. You mentioned them building a mansion back home. If Bermuda was there home or could be their home perhaps they would build a house here. Instead of sending remittances “home” perhaps they wouldn’t if their “home” was here.

See the issue? Here’s an analogy for you.

Consider if you were renting a house on a month to month lease. You don’t know how long you will be there but you are paying your rent which, in turn, allows your landlord to pay their mortgage. You know that you could be forced to find a new home at a months notice. The landlord and most of the members of his household understand that without you living there, that mortgage may not get paid, and the house may get repossessed. Perhaps one or two of the children, not as well-versed in the nuances of the situation with less financial education or experience, want to live in the apartment without having to pay rent. They insult and attack you, the tenant, who has done nothing wrong but merely trying to live your life.

Now the landlord wants to build a swimming pool and install solar panels. Would you want to pay to help him/her with this. Or would you rather use that money towards buying a home of your own or potentially use it to move in the event that you have to.

This is basically Bermuda’s situation. With the Landlord and his/her household being the Bermudian population.

The minority of the household who attacks and insults the tenant and insists that they move out, is the minority of Bermudians who feel the same way about non-Bermudians.

The majority population of the landlord’s household who understand that having a tenant is a positive thing and helps them pay their mortgage are the majority of Bermuda who understand that foreigners, like Bermudians, are an important part of Bermuda’s economy.

The tenant, of course, is the non-Bermudian long term residents without a right to status.

                • Raymond Ray says:

@ Honest Abe. Some people can’t see no further than their nose…

                  • The Original Truth™ says:

Only thing further than your nose Ray is an OBA backside. :D

                • The Original Truth™ says:

“If Bermuda was there home or could be their home perhaps they would build a house here. Instead of sending remittances “home” perhaps they wouldn’t if their “home” was here.”

No they wouldn’t because back home a house is far less than in Bermuda. Like I said not all expats are created equally and some take more than they give. I’m not talking about the same expats in your analogy. Some expats are needed in Bermuda because they have an education that’s hard to come by. Sure those ones should have an opportunity to call Bermuda home because they ad to Bermuda’s brain power but sadly PLP has seen to it that they are no longer the majority. If they were the majority we would be doing a lot better economically like we used to. These are the giving kind who we used to have.

            • drunken ursula says:

tell all those other people who constantly make nasty comment against the PLP, stop hiding behind a BS name, but you won’t cause you agree with all their narrative.

              • Raymond Ray says:

I tell everyone that I believe no-one should be permitted to sign a letter making insulting comments under a B.S name!
(It’s not because I support the One Bermuda Alliance)

              • Betty Boop says:

So your real name is Drunken Ursula? Nice name ha ha ha ha ha ha

            • The Messenger! says:

Raymond Ray, You always put money before your government’s wicked behavior. It says so much about who you are.

          • Dread says:

Some foreigners are needed,,true, but not in all job capacities. What we have now is completely open door with few restrictions an slack policing . The main group of those that seek status are the Portuguese and West Indians whom have been here for decades. To me that group given status is fair .. To the rest I say no.Also if one wants to obtain status they cannot have duel citizenship.

      • Hair says:

Give up sugar.. there is more of us than them!!!

  3. Yes Mr. Dunkley the healing will begin, When you and Mr. Fahy leave office and put someone in those perspective position’s that really care about Bermuda, and her people, folk that will not treat our country like a Harlot, sucking every thing in and spitting nothing out, sounds like… to me at the highest degree.

We need real men in these positions with testicular fortitude, then can stand up to the pressure and meet the demands of the people, not someone who is going to sell off “OUR COUNTRY” to their own countryman, who do not have any interest in our beloved Island home, but to take it bare to every single profit it can get, and then in 35 years have the option to renew or sell to the highest bidder of that day.

I for one am sick and tired of all the BS, and look forward to actually making the statement that you are clueless and need to pass the control over to someone who can get the job done, and while you are on the way out please make sure you understand, it is nothing personal, just business. So take the advice of so many and recognize you have failed us miserably for the likes of a few of your colleagues and several in the business community that just happens to look like they could be related to my dearly departed father.

Now I know why I never can attach my self to the Italian side of who I really am.

    • Zevon says:

So in other words, you choose hate over healing. Ok, I think we’ve got the picture. No surprise really.

      • frak says:

it is not hate the man has spoken the truth

        • serengeti says:

Nah. Duane wants to perpetuate hate. That’s his deal.

      • Truth Teller says:

        Zevon,
Stop with the identity politics. You guys are getting real tiresome with this stuff.

        • The Original Truth™ says:

Zevon is like Ray. They are both zealots with their heads so far up OBA’s backside they could taste what they had for lunch.

      • Unnaceptable says:

Nope, Democracy over Tyranny. Quite easy really – the power comes from the people and the people don’t want what the OBA is selling.

        • Hair says:

OBA got my back!!! bermp bermp…

          • The Original Truth™ says:

GOOD! Since they’ve got your back then you are in a good position for them drop down your draws and bermp bermp you with all the taxes they have in store.

Do you really think it will be cheap to pay for more financial assistance when more Bermudians become unemployed? Since they refuse to address the problem it wont get fixed. Even if those who were to get status did at the end of the day they would leave to avoid having half their paycheck go to assisting a welfare country.

      • ZEVON: Do not read information literally.BERMUDIANS have been treated unfairly. Any human being with a sense of fairness for all humanity will agree. Those who don’t lack HUMANENESS.
FOREIGNERS , WHO ARE HERE , AND WANT IN concerning a quick status, need to locate the nearest plane and depart. This is NOT your country, so QUIT your unnecessary arrogance.
People have comee to these islands, in the last 3 years…. behaving as though they are entitled. Nonsense!!!!

        • Its me again says:

Zevon is a paid OBA blogger.

They picked a name for him and everything. Ive been on to him.

          • serengeti says:

Wow. You’re on to him, are you. Got any proof, or are you just talking out of your ass.

          • Zevon says:

So you “been on to me” have you? What exactly does that mean? Or are you full of s#1t?

You lot just make lies for the hell of it don’t you.

        • little girl says:

@Have some backbone,I have real issues with your posts . Foreigners do not want quick status . Most have been here well over 20 ,some 30 ,some 40years ..probably before you were born . They are also contributing to your Grannies pension and everything else that keeps the economy going! How dare you tell these people that have done SO MUCH for your island to go back , leave on the nearest plane and basically b….r off!I wish every expat would say the same thing to all the parasites that have gone to the UK and lived off the UK social security having never contributed anything to the economy . Is something a little off with your thinking ? Get away from this island and broaden your views ..there is a big big world out there . You will come back with fresh eyes!

    • CCT says:

I think you mean ‘respective positions’! Then again, your entire post, not just the errors, speaks to your intelligence, or lack thereof!! It seems to me that there were people in those positions before the OBA were in power, who were, as you say, ‘treating our country like a harlot, sucking everything in and spitting nothing out’!!

      • The Original Truth™ says:

Now OBA is doing the same and acting like it’s all OK because PLP did it. The PLP left us with a debt and OBA has put another debt on top. The money loaned to OBA should have gone to solid investments but instead it goes to pie in the sky ideas that will only put money in their own pockets just as PLP did. Those who say UBP/OBA have no idea. It’s more like PLP/OBA just another side of the same rusty coin.

    • Betty Boop says:

      nah!

  4. Mirror, mirror... says:

People interested in healing don’t need a week of protests to bring them around to issues that have existed in this country throughout his lifetime. These comments are disingenuous and should not be believed. Trust them not.

  5. Bermy Girl says:

    Yawning!!!

  6. mixitup says:

I coulda had a V8! Dunkley give it a break… Ain’t no one hearing you about now.. Those who were unsure of you and your team in 2012 are sure as hell sure today.

  7. Coffee says:

Sad thing about this Premier …. He could never win a election in the past , will not in the future . He is a Premier by default . He oways listens , but seems as if hims never hears .
The positive takeaway from all this nonsense is that when he goes , Fayhe and that other bye goes wiff him . They are so out of touch with the people that it took them a week to properly gauge the overheated outrage of a very unpopular position taken by him and his closest aides .

    Something wrong !

    • Betty Boop says:

Aww you’re quoting Furbert aren’t you? You little bIUer you!

  8. You are doing fine Mr Premier says:

You are forced to make decisions that are not popular. You are on the right track to correct the economic mess that the last decade has dealt our Island.

Thanks for hearing the message to be a better communicator.

This just irks everyone that wants to see you fail because you aren’t failing things have improved people just don’t want the improvements to occur under your regime.

Don’t give up. You have a lot of supporters.

  9. ALVIN WILLIAMS says:

He really thinks that making flowery speeches about so-called unity and stepping up photo-opts is going t win him the next election. I don’t think so; the OBA is shot they won the election on a false premise and all during it’s term as government it has reveal it’s true face. It will go down in history as a one term government.

  10. rodney smith says:

Mr. Premier, You are the only man who can bring our two communities together. Let us put aside our differences and do the heavy lifting. It means ,admitting where we went wrong, having faces change places, and doing right by the people of Bermuda. It also means inviting those who other wise are on the outside, in to help both the country and the party. It means , inviting the whole country to a National day of Healing.

  11. Average Bermudian says:

    Mike & Mike

Go away and don’t come back to attempt to lead the country.
You have just run the country to the ground

If you was the President of a private company and the business collapsed under your watch – you will be replaced – immediately. Similarly, you and the other mike must resign.

Your political careers are finished – done.
“lame duck” premier and defunct fahy

Ask for healing for a injury that you irritated. ???
Your actions speak louder than your words.
    Fools

  12. The Hornet's Nest says:

If Premier Dunkley would have attended one of the Curb presentations, then maybe I would believe this. He needs to understand the history of the Bermudians of African decent, Bermudians of Portuguese decent and the decedents of white indentured servants (basically the under-privileged) in this island and what they had to go through. Until he makes that step, he is giving us all lip service. Actions speak louder than words, bruh.

Also, yes, please get rid of Fahy. He’s the worst.

  13. JUNK YARD DOG says:

The state of our economy following one of the worst recessions/ depressions in history since 1929 with the racial and political divide that has been brought upon us has caused hardship to this country and its people.

We all bring to the table very special talents, dissension ,is not one of them, stop the tyranny before it is too late, think for a moment what virtually irreparable financial damage is being done.

Reasonable and sensible people do not condone discord.

What a great nation we could be if we all played our respective parts and stopped the mud slinging by the few glory seekers, because, that is unproductive and not healthy.

We continue to loose our valuable assets, investors go else where.

If you did but know it, the same few traitors are digging our graves from which there will be no resurrection.

Yesterday day several people were sent home, unfortunately they never saw it coming.

    Every body looses.

  14. Rhonda says:

Does anyone remember the “Big Conversation”?

    • Betty Boop says:

Yeah achieved nothing and paid Commissiong a long time for nothing, but, hey that;s the way the PLP operate.

  15. drunken ursula says:

lol.. he must be in la la land, get rid of Mike Fahy..
