Gary Foster Skelton reports: We know who’s on the way up, but who’s on the way down?

As the football season draws to a close, Dandy Town Hornets are Premier champs, with both Flanagan’s Onions and Somerset Eagles promoted from the First Division.

This weekend, a final round of games will decide who will be relegated, along with Hamilton Parish.

Southampton Rangers, Devonshire Colts and last year’s champions Somerset Trojans have a point each between them. Rangers must defeat PHC in their home game on Sunday to stand a chance of avoiding the drop, should Colts or Trojans lose.

Colts need to beat Boulevard Blazers at Police Field to save themselves, while a draw for Trojans against second-place Robin Hood would secure their safety, and condemn Rangers.

Elsewhere, North Village host Devonshire Cougars, and already-relegated Hamilton Parish Hot Peppers will try to go out with a bang against champs Dandy Town at St. John’s.

All Sunday’s Premier Games Start at 3pm.

Gary Foster Skelton & Mike Sharpe report: Our Netballers in Barbados

Bermuda’s Under 16s Netball Team is in Barbados, preparing for the Caribbean Netball Association’s Jean Pierre Tournament.

The girls will compete against seven other countries, with games starting tomorrow [Saturday] and running until Friday, April 8.

As the final team selections were taking place, Under 16s coach Kimale Evans told us how the team had grown since a difficult tournament in St. Lucia last April: “We had one win and we narrowly lost a game by one,” Evans said. “We were able to stick with every team we played [in the early stages of games]… it’s just that fatigue and the mental aspect of things came into play. It just broke us down a bit in that last quarter.”

Evans added that the team in Barbados this year is a combination of last year’s experienced team and the best newcomers.

Speaking about the difference last year’s tournament made to the players who took part, Evans said: “You saw a more physical side of these players, because that’s what they experienced… when they get down there, they’re a bit shell-shocked because the game is a lot more physical with fewer calls [by the referee], so you just have to play through it. They adapted and learned that you just play to the end of the whistle.”

Gary Foster Skelton reports:When Kicking In Class Is Ok

The Bermuda Sanshou Association will launch its new Chinese kickboxing classes for children on Tuesday, April 5.

Sanda Pandas will take place every Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30pm to 5:30pm at Lotus, 46 Victoria Street.

“We’ve been around for ten years and we’ve always catered to the adults,” says BSA President Garon Wilkinson. “We came to a decision that it’s time to get the next generation ready to take our places.”

The coach for the classes will be Pan American and World Sanda League champion Sentwali Woolridge, who said: “We’ll focus on the kickboxing… but we’ll break it down… the children can learn and have fun at the same time. [There are] punches and kicks, and we’ll incorporate falls, rolls… team building skills as well. I’m strict, but I’m going to incorporate fun for the kids.”

Classes are $50 per month or $120 per term [April 5 to June 30]. For registration information, email: wushubermuda@gmail.com or call 747-8495.
