Court: 53-Year-Old Admits Cheque Fraud Offence

May 6, 2016

Appearing in Magistrates Court today [May 6], a 53-year-old man was granted bail after admitting trying withdraw money from a bank with a cheque purportedly drawn on a UK account.

Mr George Saunders admitted that in January 2015, he attempted to defraud HSBC Bermuda of 18,778 pounds sterling which converts to around $27,000.

The Crown Prosecutor told Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo that Mr Saunders did this by presenting and depositing a cheque purported to be drawn on the National Westminster Bank [UK] and later trying to take funds out of the deposit account.

In January 2015, Mr Saunders went to HSBC and sought to withdraw $9,500 from the $27,000, and also tried to withdraw $500.

The Magistrate ordered a Social Inquiry Report; set sentencing for June 2016; granted bail at $10,000 with one surety; ordered that Mr Saunders report to Hamilton Police Station every Wednesday; and that he surrender his travel documents and not leave Bermuda without the Court’s permission.
