Police Probe Into CCTV Crash Footage Release

May 25, 2016

Following the circulation of CCTV footage showing a police motorcyclist colliding with another police officer who was on foot, the police said they have “commenced an internal enquiry to determine how the CCTV footage was released without authorization.”

A police spokesperson said, “A video clip has made its way into the public domain that shows CCTV footage of a police motorcyclist colliding with another uniformed police officer on foot.

“The incident took place on Court Street last week when officers chased and detained a man who was wanted in connection with an outstanding matter.

“Fortunately, none of the officers were injured, but the incident shows how quickly accidents can happen in the confusion of a spontaneous police operation.

“The BPS has commenced an internal enquiry to determine how the CCTV footage was released without authorization.”

okay then….subtract one Civil Servant salary from the budget moving forward

    • What?? says:

The CCTV system is run and monitored by a private company. BAS Serco.

Unless of course your callous comment was directed at the police officer?

      • sage says:

What is callous about holding someone accountable?

      • Quante says:

You do realize BPS has the same viewing capability as the company who manages it right???????? If you do not know the logistics you should be careful about how you throw company names around so easily. Just saying, know your facts first…….

    • Onion Juice says:

      A winner for America’s funniest video’s.
Hope de officer is alright, and if they catch de guy, we can use him on our track team like they utilized de guys who pulled off de card trick.
      Mmmmmmm

  2. archy says:

Have to wonder if the guy on the bike actually wanted to stop. Love the way the cop on the audio has a good laugh!

    • What?? says:

Cops do not monitor the CCTV system. It is run by BAS Serco.

      • LaVerne Furbert says:

I thought BAS Serco was a thing of the past in Bermuda. But, I could be wrong.

        • Common Sense Talking says:

LaVerne you are usually up on everything! I am surprised you did not know that BAS Serco are alive and very well managing the maintenance of a large portion of the buildings in Hamilton, I won’t name names. They seemed to have expanded what they do not just airport business anymore.

    • Cris m says:

Momma always said look both ways before crossing the street..But damn the guy in front running away should try out for the track team..beep beep..

  3. Go Whistle says:

It’s not the only one circulating. There is at least one other that has been shown around

    • Rockfish#1 and #2 says:

This begs the question, can the BPS be trusted with sensitive information?

      • What?? says:

The Bermuda Police Service do not operate the CCTV system. It is run by BAS Serco.

        • Rockfish#1 and #2 says:

I know that. But the BPS is responsible for the information gathered as well as how it is managed.

        • Quante says:

Although managed by BAS….BPS also has capability of utilizing, viewing, etc.. cameras and system……..

      • anonmyway says:

BPS has a track record of flouting confidentiality

  4. Cranjis McBasketball says:

This is sad…even more so embarrassing. That deserves a ticket how u manage to hit ya own bredrin and at d same time you ain’t he moving out d way?

  5. Yep says:

Ban tinted visors……..for police too. :-)

    • Whistling Frog says:

What a slow reaction from the cop on the bike. Was he taken in a tested for a breath of alcohol like with all other reported accidents?
Then again, It might not have been reported, just leaked…

      • Random thought says:

Just maybe the officer on the bike has a little more knowledge and experience about what those heavy bikes can do had he swerved. Or just maybe he was expecting the officer on foot to continue on across the street.

    • Snowballs says:

      But not spell check.

  6. mmm says:

Human reaction, adrenalin pumping, responding to a call to apprehend a per son, in a similar action to respond to a call for help whether it be fire personnel entering a building on fire when a cry goes out that there is a child on the fourth floor, or a paramedic attempting a surgical procedure to get the person to breathe—–all actions are good in an effort to resc ue or restrain. The most trying circumstance here is that some-one breached confidentiality by releasing this action to the public, malicious or poking fun, it begs the question as to what else is likely to be released to the general public. Exactly how secure are our essential services, banking, mili tary, hospitals, transport, airport, all government buildings holding critical data—even a person,s school grades can be dumped or erased. Did someone inadvertenly push the wrong button, or released information without going thru established protocols. Bear in mind that if certain information is destroyed or put in the wrong hands we may well be in far, far more serious trouble, for which we may not recover.

    • BORING!!!! says:

Please shut up while you’re ahead… Ughhh

Bottom line is the PUBLIC know just how untrained they are in real life action… Shameful much!!!!

He should’ve known better than to run into the road period… Follow the leader… A PERFECT example of what not to do in life!

    • Positive Pessimist says:

What probably happened is the operator deliberately taped it and sent it to ONE person with strict instructions not to send it to anyone else. That person then probably sent it to ONE person with strict instructions not to send it to anyone else. Then it went on and on and on. It’s the same thing with a secret-you tell one person and tell them not to tell anyone else and they tell one person and say not to tell anyone else and then the next thing you know, the whole world knows. The bottom line is that if you don’t have the restraint and self-control to keep something to yourself, don’t expect the next person to.

  7. D says:

Wow this is so sad, I feel sorry for the police officer that got knocked down and Now someone is humiliating him because he got knocked down that is so cruel bps should commend that office cause he was trying his best to catch the guy reward him he could have gotten very hurt

  8. Terry says:

    Simple case to solve.
This is where integrity plays a part on those that have all that stuff on their shoulders and speak what is written for them.

If you can’t book em Danno; leave the building because we all know many can do your job.
    Shalom

  9. NT says:

This just makes the matter even worse. How do they think it got out? I mean really, it’s not that hard to figure out. A bunch of clowns.

“Fortunately, none of the officers were injured, but the incident shows how quickly accidents can happen in the confusion of a spontaneous police operation.” LOL

  10. Truth is killin' me... says:

Whoever leaked this…FIRE DEM! What else has this person leaked????Cannot be trusted. Wonder why the criminals find out about Police Operational sh*t. Example for all to see!!!

  11. Triangle Drifter says:

Oh let it go. Time is better spent solving real crime. The more fuss made over the file the more the public is going to have a good laugh at the BPS’s expense.

  12. Oh,I see now says:

Taking the lesser of two evils, I pray they it was human error and not an outside breach of the CCTV system.Damn I shudder to even think of the possibilities.

  13. Maria Seaman says:

Probably the fella laughing while viewing the footage….

  14. BermudaLov says:

Maybe they should fire the policeman on d bike as it appears he has seeing problems lol

  15. HW says:

Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t believe the police do the day to day monitoring of the CCTV. They can access it but I thought a 3rd party ran and monitored it.

    • What?? says:

You are correct. It is run and monitored by BAS Serco.

      • BORING says:

How many times are you gonna say BAS Serco??? Free advertising inna ***BORE ME LESS*** but I will say that the video is hilarious! And the fact the bike rider even hit the running officer was totally avoidable and as you can see they went straight for him as there was PLENTY of room for them to go around him or even stop.

And at the end of the day it happened, the video was leaked, so what’s next on the agenda? How about we go catch actual criminals and not worry about who leaked a funny video. No one was hurt so no big deal … Keep it moving!

        • Anbu says:

You must be Valentino Rossi huh. Ever ridden one of those mahines mate? Ever had to stop suddendly when 250+hp throws you forward because uve rapidly accelerated?…..didnt think so. It is damn near impossible to stop. And had the officer tried an evasive maneuver the bike prob would have bucked sending the rear wheel into the officer instead of giving him a slight bump which still could have caused serious damage to both officers. Smh. Too bad paynter wasnt chasing him tho.

          • Positive Pessimist says:

Well, that sounds downright dangerous, then. I thought these officers were so highly trained with ‘special superpowers’ that allow them to speed like maniacs to catch people without crashing or hitting someone like us mere mortals. So if they can’t stop that easily, that’s scary-what if an unsuspecting mother was pushing a stroller and the police hit the stroller because they couldn’t stop in time?

I personally have a problem with police chasing people in/on vehicles unless the criminals are really, really dangerous. Even if the police are trained in high speed maneuvers, the fleeing driver isn’t and in their desperation to get away could kill an innocent person-a pedestrian or another driver/rider. Bermuda is only yay big and the police know who these guys are and in most cases, where to find them. They don’t need to speed like demons to catch someone for some minor thing, when they can easily pick them up later eventually. Innocent people have been killed overseas during these high speed police chases-I’d hate to see that happen here.

            • Palmetto Bug says:

Unsuspecting would not be running into oncoming traffic?
              Ouch!

          • sage says:

250 hp huh, you sound like a real expert.

  16. Grizz says:

Oh for crying out loud, GET OVER IT! I would much better appreciate if BPS spent their time catching killers, rather than worrying about a leaked video. Yes, it was a police officer that got hit but aside from that, it was funny. He wasn’t hurt so what’s the problem? Okay yes, it may have been a bit embarrassing for him but he didn’t die; he got up; he walked away. All was in tact besides his pride! Our police resources are stretched as it is….focus on REAL CRIME please. In a few days this will be forgotten.

    • U.K. says:

I couldn’t agree with you more, they actually make this video news… Joker force you got people dying and you worrying about some funny video to investigate….it’s obvious whoever was working at them cctv monitors leaked dummies!!!

    • Rosie says:

I agree Grizz……Ok…..Geesh…..Catch a REAL offender…….I guarantee you that if they are not already laughing about it now it will definitely be the joke at the next Christmas Party…#bermudasfunniestvideos

    • Positive Pessimist says:

So you’re the one who leaked it, huh?

    • What?? says:

Can’t wait to see the video of something embarrassing happening to you. We allow our daily lifes to be monitored by these cameras for the sake of safety. We should not have to worry about embarrassing incidents winding up on Bermuda’s Funniest Videos.

      • Grizz says:

@what – I take it you are talking to me, so let me respond! You don’t have to wait to see any embarrassing videos of me; you will probably never see them because clearly YA NOT ANY OF MY COMPANY! You think being embarrassed in life is the end of the world?! Get over yourself! And please don’t talk no dumb shit to me about those cameras keeping anyone safe! Have you been paying attention…I live back of town sweetheart and those cameras ain’t caught a damn thing to help the crimes that happen in the hood! So save that speech for someone who cares! IT WAS FUNNY! PERIOD!!! LIVE, LOVE AND LAUGH my dear, anything else is not worth your time!

  17. Realize & Legalize says:

  19. Olympic Coach says:

Are we all gonna to just ignor the Speed and talents of the young track star at the beginning, the Olympics are in a few months, I think this young man is Bermudas best shot at gold! Watch out Usain

    • Rockfish#1 and #2 says:

      Coach,
I am compelled to respectfully disagree with you. He seems to be more suited to either hurdles or steeplechase……lol

      • Olympic Coach says:

        Very True, Coach Stands corrected!

    • Rosie says:

OMG….I had this same discussion with my Co-Worker….Ya boy was ‘Floating’..LOL….They weren’t catching him….lol…

    • Positive Pessimist says:

Exactly! Forget about locking this guy up-get him in some training now, ’cause he can MOVE. He can definitely be prepped to win Bermuda some gold medals!

  20. Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

Looks like he was chasing Usain Bolt…hahaha!

  21. home gardner says:

the one on the bike is totally clueless. Mr Magoo could see the officer in the road from that distance

  22. Terry says:

    S**t happens.
They left me and my partner laying on Princess Street in 1971 and all rode away on their cycles
They all went on to be managers of banks and others and most went back to Britain.

    Onions even do it.
    Shalom.

  23. Wait on it says:

He’s already outrunning Jamaicans and Bajans… And that $20,000 Japanese police bike lol

  24. U.K. says:

What’s to investigate…..it’s obvious it’s whoever was working during that time leaked it an further more they gonna waste time investigating some tape when people are getting murdered in the island come on be for real that’s why nothing gets solved….jokers!!!!

  25. Real Deal says:

OMG that video quality is crap. Is this million dollar quality?
My cell phone gave better quality than this.

  26. Nigel Spider says:

    My favorite show RENO 911.

  27. Real says:

To me this can’t be anything of strict confidentiality because it happed in public in the middle of a busy street surrounded by people and the person used a cellphone to record of a monitor. Their watching us and we’re watching them. Besides I’m sure when he was young his mother told him don’t run in the street because you might get knocked down. I’m sure he knows now.

  28. Real says:

They should spend less time worrying about who posted it and spend their time training and educating their officers

  29. Real says:

They’ve been embarrassed so now they want to punish some else for their own mistake. Learn from it and move on. Its not the first time a clip has been released of them and we all had a good laugh at it. Remember them running from a friendly dog at someone’s house.

  30. I tried not to comment about this, but I am irritated with some of the comments and the incident. There should be a concern that persons should not be recording anything from the CCTV cameras. Whether it was a police officer or a CCTV operator from the private company it is out of order. When you commence any job confidentiality forms are completed and signed off by employees. Cellphones need to be banned from the area to avoid a reoccurrence of incidences. This type of foolishness by an irresponsible individual is no way to reassure the people of Bermuda that more CCTCs will help with crime etc. Hoping the officer is not injured or has delayed injuries. The person responsible needs to be reprimanded and if necessary suspended without pay.

    • Grizz says:

@bermyCcTV Guy – NEWSFLASH my Dear, WE ALREADY KNOW CCTV ISN’T HELPING TO SOLVE CRIME IN BERMUDA! Do you not pay attention; CCTV in Bermuda is a damn joke! Seems to work with convenience; never available WHEN REAL SERIOUS CRIMES are taking place. Please spare me with your “suspension without pay”; you want to talk about someone being irresponsible SUSPEND YOUR MINISTER OF “national” SECURITY! the buck stops there Mate!

  31. Coffee says:

Bumbling idiots the lot of them ….
Time to have all local police any how..

    • Sage says:

A local only force? – heaven help us.
As for going after the person who shared the video that would only lead to another island wide strike.

  32. Legalgal says:

Maybe trained by the same guys as the regiment lead car who took Estwank ona Wild goose chase at their recent road race causing her to get lost and lose the race? Bermuda’s finest.but fire whoever released this.

  33. Time Shall Tell says:

Let’s look at it from a different point of view, let’s say it wasn’t a police officer to knock down a fellow officer but rather a member of the public. Do you think the emphasis now would be on who leaked the video or rather how they plan to prosecute the member of the public that struck the police officer? Do you also think the police officer who was hit would of just got up & walked it off had it of been a member of the public to of just ran him down like that or do think the maybe the incident would of escalated?

  34. Observer says:

Forget the BAS Serco stuff. Your recording with your cell phone from the monitor. Clearly an internal leak by the Comops officers on duty. From my time in the the service I can clearly identify voice on the phone. Discipline action a must for the idiot responsible for this leak. Transfer him to Government House for the rest of his career. observer

    • Ernie n Bert says:

you are a true loser to the highest degree, pathetic. get a life, Jesus Christ is weeping about how dumb you are

Now we all have proof CCTV cameras do work.move on now.we have killers walking the street.Back to work now thanks

  36. Y2K says:

    Incompetent

  37. Davie Kerr says:

This is a classic example of a “storm in a teacup”. Would the same reaction have been produced if the people involved had been anyone other than two Policemen? I don’t think so.
    It’s happened: move on.

    • Rockfish#2 says:

      Of course not, Commissioner Kerr!
Ordinary members of the public are not trained to deal with these types of situations. The BPS are, or at least should be.

  38. mmm says:

Police officers face all kinds of situations, and have to respond, so do firemen and paramedics, you do the best you can with the available resource s, training and experience. Emergency services train over and over again as to how best to handle an emergency. There will always be comments, both for and against. Suppose a person is moving around in your house at 4 in the morning, and the house is in darkness. What do you do ? You do what-ever it takes to eliminate/reduce/contain the threat if possible given your limited resources. You don,t know what you are responding to you are trying to pro tect your self, loved ones and property. A jury will argue back and forth as to whether or not you used too much force and seriously injured the culprit—how-ever your heart is racing and your anxious for your survival. You went thru the experience and not the jury, no rehersal. You can never fully prepare and respond to textbook perfection.

  39. Y-Gurl says:

They need to probe into the pathetic driving of these bikes yet again, the cop driver had about 4 seconds to react …and didn’t, what if that had been a child on the street would the BPS be blaming the child? Come on DeSilva get a grip of your people!

  40. JT says:

    Lmaooooooooooooooooooooooooooo #funny

  41. mumbojumbo says:

The truth does not need authorisation!
    CCTV is public domain fool!

  43. mumbojumbo says:

Now…did the motorcycle have its’ syren on?
Cause….that is what it is 4!

  44. Ernie n Bert says:

Looked like Robocop wanted to run the guy over, I have no sympathy for these bike cops because they exist only to rob us of our hard earned money via speeding tickets.

I feel bad for the cop who got hit, what a douche driving the bike. the only cool cop is the girl who drives bikes, but one night she booked me for going 60kph when I was only doing 35kph with her right behind me super slow.

Take those bikes from those cops, they dont need them and abuse their power to give out fake tickets. In any other country it needs to be proved you were speeding not word of mouth via Robocop.

  45. Ernie n Bert says:

why do police need bikes that weigh 600 lbs and do 160mph?

why do you need a superbike on our island?

You really need to go 8 times the speed limit?

get a helicopter if you wanna go from one end to the other fast.

  46. Flocka Flocka Betty Crocka says:

they should CCTV all the PLP rallies and meetings so we can see and hear all the trash they talk about people and the OBA, and their secret plans for anarchy and taking over the island. Cuz we all knowwwwww it goes down like that

    • Datbye says:
