May 11, 2016

In the lead up to Bermuda Day on May 24, the City of Hamilton is reminding the public to “abide by the rules and engage in acceptable public behavior” and has asked that marking of sidewalks for camps only be done using “temporary and removable measures” and also said that “tents and other structures are not to be erected until Tuesday May 24th, from one minute past midnight.”

The City said, “Marking of sidewalks for camps must only be done using temporary and removable measures. This includes chalk or small pieces of tape with the family name written on it.

“Permanent marker, paint, string, chord, bedsheets or any other materials are not acceptable – they can create a safety hazard and is an illegal act of littering.”

The full advisory from the City follows below:

In the lead up to Bermuda Day on May 24, the City of Hamilton is reminding the public to abide by the rules and engage in acceptable public behavior.

At this time of year a number of concerns arise:

  • Marking of sidewalks for camps must only be done using temporary and removable measures. This includes chalk or small pieces of tape with the family name written on it. Permanent marker, paint, string, chord, bedsheets or any other materials are not acceptable – they can create a safety hazard and is an illegal act of littering.
  • Tents and other structures are not to be erected until Tuesday May 24th, from one minute past midnight.

Clean up:

  • Members of the public in tents are reminded to take everything with them when cleaning up after the event, including the tape from the sidewalk.
  • City sanitation workers will provide bags as usual to each camp and remind the public to secure all trash in bags and tie it tightly to avoid spills. City Works crew work tirelessly cleaning up after the day’s events and appreciate not being tasked with collecting litter that could have been placed in a trash bag.

Respect:

  • We ask the public to properly respect City property and private property. We are aware of one popular area that will not be open this year as it was trashed by the public. We remind everyone to please be mindful and considerate of other people.

Request for assistance in emergencies:

  • Public restrooms are well serviced during busy public events such as this, with extra cleaners and supplies on hand.
  • The public is reminded that delinquent behaviour, vandalism, etc should be reported immediately to the police as usual.

We appreciate the cooperation of the general public to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday event for all.

      • c.Outerbridge says:

Did you not read the article at all? First paragraph.

        • Hmm says:

“tents and other structures are not to be erected until Tuesday May 24th, from one minute past midnight.” didn’t say anything about marking the road

  2. Double 7 Single Niner says:

Pffftt. Whatever. I’ll be out there from this weekend marking out my prime viewing spot at the junction of Front Street and Reid Street. Good thing I got a new tent off of Amazon this year. #OccupyFrontStForAPrimeViewingSpot!

    • I got to much brains says:

That’s my spot , I’m campin out two nights before.

      • Jus' Wonderin' says:

    • BURN says:

Why don’t you ask Enda Matties to sit out there for you. Shes got pure experience with droppin a flex.

  3. ella says:

Yes… Good luck on that one!

  4. Maddog says:

It’s not your personal property – so act like you would a guest in someone’s home, and leave it as you find it.

  5. Ronnie Viera says:

It is ridiculous that people mark the side walks and then do not clean up before they leave. Last year the markings were still showing months after May 24th. The City knows that few will clean up but never do anything about it.

  6. frank says:

simple solution the corporation mark out the spots
then folks get the spots through the corporation
then there is no fighting over spots

  7. I heart 441 says:

Any spots marked by something permanent, the police should arrest those in that spot on the 24th or at least ask them to remove and leave that spot open throughout the parade. This will set an example for all those for the future.

    • Toodle-oo says:

This is not a place that likes examples being set . Remember December 1977 ?

    • format says:

Presumably they did that with the Steede family and their permanent paint on Marsh Folly Road. Still there in all it’s glory.

  8. Concerned says:

It’s time to start charging for the spots and people don’t clean up, mark the areas including trees and grass (spray paint) they don’t get a spot for two years and a fine.

  9. watchfuleyes says:

Yeah good luck with all those rules being obeyed and enforced ..lol lol

    • Martha says:

Exactly. No one is going to obey no rules regarding saving a spot. People need to be realistic instead of saying things that is never going to happen

  10. Triangle Drifter says:

HA! As if any of those rules are going to be enforced! Good luck. It will be mark em up & make a mess as usual. No penalty.

The COH should mark spots & sell them at $50 per 10′ site. Take a cleanup deposit in addition refundable if site is clean imediatly after the parade.

  11. Coffee says:

Somehow don’t think that’ll be a problem this year !

  12. Honestly says:

There are some real Jack### after reading these comments! When will some people grow up? It’s sickening reading some of these responses!
