Fishing: Light Tackle Tournament Gets Underway
Nine teams took to the water the first day of fishing in the 50th International Light Tackle Tournament after the first day was cancelled due to the weather forecast. There are seven overseas anglers from the US and Bahamas and eleven new local ones. They are using 12lb line test to catch or release fish.
The teams had mixed results with some only managing one release while others brought sizable fish to the weigh station at Barr’s Bay Park in Hamilton.

New anglers and team to the tournament, Pelagic Playas with lawyers Niel Jones, Craig Macintyre and Matthew Strong had an excellent day catching the most fish and placing third for the day. Craig caught the largest one, which was a 59.5lb yellowfin tuna, just beating the only female angler Cindy Mitchell’s yellowfin tuna by 2.3lb.

Neil McKinney from the Bahamas was top angler for the day with 4,974 points for the four fish he caught, two yellowfin tuna 53.8lb and 43.1lb and two wahoo 33.6lb and 25.6lb.
Niel Jones, no stranger to fishing light tackle, came in second with 4,444 points, and Bobby Rego, who returns after a 10 year break took third place with two fish, giving him 4,118 points for the day.
High Point Team Day 1 Bermuda Water Sports – Danny Fox, Paul Fox, Bobby Rego
Top team for the day was Bermuda Water Tours captained by veteran tournament angler Danny Fox, who is fishing his for the 21st time, Bobby Rego and an alternate angler each day.
The team accumulated 8,324 points for the eight fish they caught. Paul Fox, the alternate, another new angler got three of those and placed fourth for the day. In second place is Bait ‘n’ Switch – Cindy Mitchell, Neil McKinney and Mark Mitchell.
