June 21, 2016

XL Group plc announced today that the 2016 XL Catlin Scholarship has been awarded to Kyrsten Burrows, Deputy Head Boy at The Berkeley Institute, and a graduate of the dual enrolment program at the Bermuda College.

The XL Catlin Scholarship is a four-year full scholarship open to students who are Bermudian or hold Permanent Resident Certificate status and are working toward a degree in [re]insurance-related studies. 18-year-old Kyrsten, the son of Kyril and Delcina Bean-Burrows of Southampton, was selected from a list of close to 30 applicants for the scholarship.

“Kyrsten was the first male student in the College’s Dual Enrolment Program to receive an Associates of Arts and Science degree from the College before receiving his senior school diploma,” XL Catlin said.

“He graduated from the College in May and is scheduled to graduate from Berkeley with Principals Honors on June 27. He met the graduation requirements of Berkeley in 2015, a year ahead of his current year group.

“He is also scheduled to continue his studies at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology where he will major in Actuarial Science and pursue a Bachelor of Science [Hons] degree in Applied Mathematics. His ultimate goal is to become a Mathematical Engineer with an actuary designation and a doctorate.”

XL Catlin Scholarship Committee Acting Chairperson Carol Parker Trott said: “As a committee, every year we are fortunate to meet so many high caliber young people. Selecting a winner from the impressive list of applicants is always difficult.

“We selected Kyrsten based on his exceptional academic achievements, leadership abilities, and level of maturity. We believe that he will not only do well at university but will make significant contributions to our industry, our island and beyond.”

Describing himself as “enthusiastic, driven and diligent”, Kyrsten has the academic results to prove this. His academic achievements include earning grades that placed him at the top of his year group at Berkeley for four consecutive years.

Kysten is also the recipient of the 2016 Outstanding Teen in Academic Achievement Award, the IGCSE Physics Award, Principals Honors for four consecutive years, the Dr. Earl Seaton Memorial Award at the College for demonstrating the qualities of a great scholar, the 2015 Dr. Clifford Maxwell Memorial Award for outstanding mathematical achievement and the 2014 Police Commissioner’s Vision Award for citizenship.

In addition to his academic accomplishments, Kyrsten founded Project Pangea, a peer tutoring program for students at Berkeley and throughout the school system who struggle with mathematics.

Kyrsten’s community service activities include participating in local camps as a counsellor and traveling abroad to do missionary work with Word of Life in impoverished areas of Trinidad and Honduras.

In terms of extracurricular activities, he serves as an Acolyte at St. James the Greater Anglican Church, practises Mixed Martial Arts, participates in team triathlons and plays the guitar. He also enjoys playing video games, listening to music and singing.
