STEAM Summer Courses Offered To Students

The Department of Education’s Gifted and Talented Education Programme [GATE] will offer a summer Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics [STEAM] Academy for students. This is the second year that the department has held a summer STEAM academy for students Primary 5 through senior school.

“The STEAM Academy is a joint partnership with GREAT4LEARNING—Global, Resources, Educational Apps & Technology and AH! TEMPO– Bermuda’s Premiere Show choir & Performing Arts Programme,” a spokesperson said.

“As part of the summer academy several programmes are being offered including a Gaming Academy for students interested in learning video game production. This course will be offer for one-week, July 11- 15. In addition, the STEAM Academy has developed an exciting performing arts course from July 4 -26.

“GREAT4LEARNING is hosted by Bermuda’s own Darren [Butch] Burchall, now teaching in Brazil, who will immerse students in the development of 21st century learning experiences that are creative, collaborative, and complete with critical thinking.

“Students will engage daily in critical thinking, technological expertise, collaboration, bilingual communication, global awareness and entrepreneurship via a web-based platform. This programme is for students who have been nominated by their school.

“AH! TEMPO, under the directorship of local Music Director, Mrs. Malinda Simmons-Jennings, and a team of local experts in the Visual and Performing Arts, will immerse students in the multi-facets of the Arts creating a musical production. The students will experience daily instruction in dance, devising original drama, vocal styles, vocal technique, set building, costume and prop making.”

The STEAM Academy at CedarBridge will be held July 4 -26 and the gaming course, July 11-15. For more information or to register visit www.moed.bm/gate

The summer course will culminate with a STEAM Student Showcase on July 26 at Ruth Seaton James Centre for Performing Arts at 7pm, tickets are $35.00.
