June 27, 2016

SGY1 students at Saltus Grammar School spent part of their afternoon today [June 27] racing the Formula One model cars they have been busy designing and building in their Design and Technology Class.

DT Head Philip Heap says: “These SGY1 students are following a Design and Manufacturing course that includes Product Design, Engineering, Interior Design and Furniture Manufacturing.

“A variety of real life Design Briefs are set for them to create innovative solutions for each particular problem. The F1 Car challenge relates to technological principles of aerodynamics, structure and CAD/CAM Technology.”

The students designed prototypes in a variety of styles from “fun custom cars” to more serious cars which are engineered for speed. The cars were tested and raced on an 80ft track – set up by DT Technician Mike Hooper – with speeds up to 70mph propelled by a small CO2 canister. Student Ben Smith had the fasted car of the day while Amy Palmer had the second fasted.
