Photos: ‘Yes’ Campaigners On East Broadway

June 21, 2016

Activist Tony Brannon and a few other ‘Yes’ campaign supporters could be seen out on East Broadway this morning [June 21], with signs saying ‘Vote Yes, Yes on June 23.”

Mr Brannon said, “Bermuda, please vote ‘Yes Yes’ on June 23rd. The response at the Johnny Barnes sculpture on East Broadway was 99% positive with loads of car toots, thumbs up gestures from all manner of Bermudians. We only heard 3 cars shout out ‘No No’.”

The referendum will be held this coming Thursday [June 23] with voters to head to the polls to answer two questions: ‘are you in favour of same-sex marriage in Bermuda?’ and ‘are you in favour of same-sex civil unions in Bermuda?’

Minister of Home Affairs Patricia Gordon-Pamplin previously said, “We encourage full participation so that we may gauge the public sentiment on these issues.”

What Bermuda needs now is love sweet love….

  2. OBSERVER says:

    VOTE………..NO!! NO!!!!NO!!!!

  3. OBSERVER says:

IDEA…..While the YES is on one side….put the NO on the other.Great balance of thoughts!!!!

    • Mike Hind says:

There’s a big difference between the sides… it’s not balanced.

One side is promoting equality and has given reasons for doing so.

The other is trying to deny equality and has given no reason whatsoever to do so.

  4. San George says:

I can’t afford to help you; I am broke. My economic condition trumps my sexual orientation. Share the money and we can share the love.

    • Mike Hind says:

What do you do? Where are your skills focused? Maybe we could help you find a job.

Standing on East Broadway doesn’t really cost anything, does it?
Or were you working? Why not just say that?

    • Just the Tip says:

We would have loved to share the money but Preserve Marriage was the ones who pushed for this referendum so i’d go talk with them about the money.

    • Good Vibrations says:

San George, you ain’t broke and we all know it. Even if you are unemployed like you claim try spending less time with negative blogging and more time studying, upgrading your skills, volunteering, and other things that would make you employable.

  5. ok says:

I’m voting yes yes but to put the sign on Johny Barnes was disrespectful. He is a seventh day Adventist and the religion does not agree with same sex marriage or civil unions. So please take the sign off of the statue.

    • Will says:

Meh…I’d like to see yes campaigners hang signs on churches at night..Would be a big laugh come the next morning if the ame and sda churches had rainbow flags draped over them..Would make for a good chuckle

      • Legal gal says:

No it would be disrespectful. And do the human rights cause real damage. A lot of Christians do not hold to this “eye for an eye”, Old Testament view that a lot of Bermudian churches have. We need to set the tone, not lower it to their level.

As a Christian catholic I will stay within my church and campaign. As a lawyer I will represent every individual in respect of their equal right to a civil marriage, just like we fought against racism, so we shall overcome homophobia. God bless.

  6. Smh says:

Why are we putting political posters on statues of real people? Johnny Barnes didn’t publicly come as in favor of SSM . Even though I am in favor , that’s a bit disrespectful …

    • YesYes says:

I have seen the statue dressed up in all sorts of regalia before now – and as a matter of fact Johnny Barnes’ famous morning mantra is “I love you” – The statue was put up because of the love he shared for over 30 years, not because of discrimination.

  7. Decision made says:

I don’t think having people on the side of the road is going to change peoples’ minds. I am sure they have made up their mind for or against. I know I have made my decision and no matter how much campaigning is going on for either side, it will not change.

  8. San George says:

Johnny Barnes certainly does not support this mess; get that sign off of him.
    C’mon man!

  9. Swing Voter says:

    god told me no

    • Good Vibrations says:

God told you to love thy neighbor, no to cast judgment on others, and made statements like , let he has not sinned cast the first stone. Where in the Bible does it say, you are to judge others and hate. Who made you judge and jury?
You can’t pick out the parts of the Bible that suit YOU.

    • Family Man says:

God was against the abolition of slavery.
God was against giving women the vote.
      God was against interracial marriage.

God has quite a track record.

    • Legal gal says:

So what. Human rights say “yes”.

  10. Coffee says:

Now why would anyone HANG such a sign on JB ?

    • Will says:

Because he loves us! He may not be in love with us but he sure does love us. Don’t tell me Johnny barnes hates some people….

      • Coffee says:

I’d love to HANG a stupid sign around your neck ! See how you like it ..

        • Full Fuulish says:

Your hates showing Coffee! Such hateful people on this small island. Oh the irony- considering the majority claim to experience a similar sort of hatred on a daily basis.
