Family-Friendly Fun At Saturday’s Foil Fest

June 22, 2016

[Written by Mikaela Ian Pearman]

Foil Fest is happening on Saturday, June 25 from 11am to 4pm in Dockyard and it’s the perfect event to bring the family for a fun day out. Foil Fest, much like the America’s Cup World Series last October, has as much to offer on-shore as it does on the water. Yes, there will be races, and there will also be great vendors, a kids zone and so much more.

Here are my top reasons why Foil Fest should be on your schedule this weekend.

Kids Zone

There’s a whole kids zone and it’s Free. That’s right, you won’t have to pay for your kids to do anything – no buying tickets, no wristbands and no tantrums, because they can bounce on the fun castle as long as they like! There will be fun games, face painting and a zip line – all complimentary!

Team Base Tours

Oracle Team USA and SoftBank Team Japan will open their bases from 11am to 1pm for Foil Fest attendees. This is something that typically only happens for sponsors or invited guests, so it’s pretty cool. Parents and kids will enjoy getting a behind the scenes look at America’s Cup bases where the teams are working to win next year’s competition.

Great Music

DJ Rusty G, winner of a Best of Bermuda Award for best DJ for the past two years, will be at Foil Fest. He’s bound to play high energy music for the crowd to enjoy. He will also assist MC Glenn Jones in hosting, so you’re in for a good time.

Meet Team BDA

Team BDA finalists, Bermuda’s entrant into the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup will be officially introduced at Foil Fest. These 15 young sailors who have survived the two cuts so far, continue to train extensively as they prepare to race against some of the best youth sailors in the world. Foil Fest is a great time to get to know Team BDA and throw your support behind our home grown team.

Sailing with AC Endeavour

The America’s Cup Endeavour program will have its West Fort open in Dockyard, offering mini sailing sessions. Whether your child has ever sailed or not, this is a great opportunity for them to get on the water and try it out. The boats are fun and the instructors make it easy to enjoy at any level. Almost 1000 Bermuda school students have participated in the programme and this a chance to see what its all about.

The Races

Boats from a few different local classes, including the America’s Cup AC45s will be racing. The comets, the optimists, the Pilot Gigs, the kiteboarders and the moths will take their turn on the same ‘drag race’ course as the AC boats. But of course, the AC boats are the main attraction and, in a completely unique format they will be racing right off of the dock. Hopefully we’ll get a good Bermuda breeze so we can watch these boats really fly!
