Junior Tennis Players Win In El Salvador

The U16 Bermuda team is competing in the Junior International Tennis Championships for Central America and the Caribbean in El Salvador, with positive results achieved by the island competitors.

The boys qualified for the main draw by winning both their matches early on, with Ricky [Trey] Mallory Jr. defeating Zachary Du Boulay [St. Lucia] 6-0 and 6-1 and Scott Redmond defeating Ruben Pinchas [Jamaica] 7-6 and 6-2.

A spokesperson said, “Playing in the main draw, Scott Redmond started out a bit nervous playing his match against the number six seed Patrick Sydow of Aruba, who recently played in the final of the Orange Bowl.

“Even though he went down 6-0,6-0. I was impressed with how he competed and fought for every point. He never got down on himself and remained positive.”

“Ricky Mallory III, aged 14, won a tough first round match in three sets against 16 year old Alberto Gutierrez of Honduras. Mallory started out a little slow trying to adjust to the faster surface on court 2. He was up a break at 4-2 in the first set then allowed his opponent to get back in the set.

“A few unforced errors cost Mallory and he ended up losing the first set 7-5.

“On the change over Mallory regrouped and decided to change his defensive strategy and take the game to his opponent. He did just that, blowing his opponent off the court in the second set in 20mins 6-0, Mallory kept the momentum in the third by winning 6-3.

“Mallory will face the number eight seed tomorrow Alejandro Piedra from Costa Rico. The boys then teamed up to defeat Darren Martis and Nathan Recao from Curaçao 6-1, 1-6, and 11-9.”
