Ministry: Vandals Damaging Public Restrooms

July 14, 2016

The Ministry of Environment is appealing to the public for assistance in curbing vandalism at the island’s beaches, saying “the enjoyment of Bermuda’s beaches and parks has been marred by vandals.”

A spokesperson said, “The enjoyment of Bermuda’s beaches and parks has been marred by vandals who are targeting restrooms, some renovated as recently as six months ago. The Ministry of the Environment is asking for the public’s help to report vandals or acts of vandalism to the Bermuda Police Service and the Department of Parks.

“The Government has a responsibility to ensure that these natural attractions are well maintained and administered, and has invested considerable money and resources to refurbishing public restrooms.

“This is in part to support Bermuda’s “Beach Vision”, which is based on detailed surveys carried out by the Bermuda Tourism Authority and the Ministry of Public of Works.

“Pristine beaches, enhanced amenities and improved restroom facilities top the list of things that both local residents and visitors to Bermuda said should be part of the ‘Bermuda beach experience’.

“The Department of Parks welcomes the public’s assistance in keeping an eye on our public amenities. If anyone sees vandals in action, call the Bermuda Police Service at 911. Destruction of park property should be reported to the Department of Parks at 236-5902.”

Minister of the Environment Cole Simons said, “We all have a responsibility to ensure that everyone—local and visitor—has a very positive and enjoyable beach or park experience. We cannot and must not tolerate willful vandalism to washrooms in our parks and beaches.”

So up put cameras to monitor the car parks and entrance areas. Have the bathrooms checked and monitored regularly and maybe we’ll catch some of these low lifes. Then make their sentences to include cleaning them for months.
