August 21, 2016

The PLP extended congratulations to Bermuda’s Olympic Team, saying they “represented us well and made Bermuda proud.”

The 2016 Rio Olympics came to a close with the closing ceremony this evening, with Bermuda’s 8-strong team having completed competition, representing the island in five different sports.

Shadow Minister of Health & Community Affairs Michael Weeks said, “As the Olympics draws to a close, the Bermuda Progressive Labour Party would like to congratulate all of our athletes who have represented us and made the Bermuda community tremendously proud over the course of the games.

Julian Fletcher and Rebecca Heyliger who represented the island in Men’s 100m breaststroke and Women’s 50m freestyle respectively, Cameron Pimentel and Cecilia Wollmann who showed their strong sailing skills, Michelle Pearson who showed a strong performance in rowing, Tyrone Smith who proudly represented us in long jump, and Tre Houston who made a strong impression during his Olympic debut deserve our praise for their hard work and dedication to their sports.

“Additionally, we would like to congratulate Flora Duffy, who showed an exceptional performance in the women’s triathlon with an 8th place finish. Flora has continued to perform at a high level, and her performance in Rio is one that should make every Bermudian proud,” added Mr Weeks.

“To make it to the Olympics is a major accomplishment for all athletes, and we thank and applaud those who represented Bermuda for their hard work. Each of them continue to be an inspiration to us all.”

Senator Renee Ming said, “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate each of the athletes who have represented Bermuda in the 2016 Rio Olympics. To have qualified and be considered for the Bermuda contingent shows a strong level of commitment to their individual discipline.

“A special congratulations to my fellow St Georgian, Harold ‘Tre’ Houston. The St. George’s community is proud of your result in the 200m heat. Your time of 20.85 seconds was impressive and truly something to share with the up and coming young athletes.

“I would also like to congratulate triathlete Flora Duffy on her outstanding 8th place finish. Flora displayed great strength and determination throughout the race and made all Bermudians watching proud.

“Again, well done to all, you’ve represented well and made Bermuda proud,” concluded Senator Ming.
