Healthy Lunches For Dellwood Middle School

September 8, 2016

September has been declared National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, and Lahey Hospital & Medical Center [LHMC] will sponsor the creation and delivery of 280 healthy lunches for the students at Dellwood Middle School on Tuesday, September 13th.

Lahey said, “In July of 2015, Jeanne Atherden, Minister of Health, Seniors, and Environment, advised the House of Assembly that nearly 75 percent of Bermuda’s population is either overweight or clinically obese. This statistic is even more concerning when considering more than 10,000 children live on the island.

“Obesity during childhood can have a harmful effect on the body in a variety of ways. Children who are obese have a greater risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, insulin resistance, type-2 diabetes, breathing problems, joint problems, liver disease, and some cancers. These issues can lead to lifelong physical and behavioral health issues, along with an increased risk of being bullied.

“September has been declared National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, and to help combat this growing epidemic, Lahey Hospital & Medical Center [LHMC] will sponsor the creation and delivery of 280 healthy lunches for the students at Dellwood Middle School on Tuesday, September 13, 2016, lunch will be Noon-2:00pm.

“The lunches will be prepared by Mary Smith, the owner of EatSmart Bermuda, a catering company featuring a wide variety of health conscious meals and snacks, including low-glycemic choices. The menu will include egg salad and grilled chicken tender sandwiches, fruit salad and vegetable sticks.

“Lahey has been working collaboratively with Bermuda’s medical community for more than 20 years, and we take great pride in fulfilling our mission to give back to the communities we serve,” said Dinamarie Garcia-Banigan, MD, MPH, Lahey Hospital & Medical Center Endocrinologist.

“These healthy meals will go a long way toward educating Bermudian children and families on ways to eat healthy and avoid the long-term consequences of obesity.”

“Dr. Garcia-Banigan and Ocean Rock Wellness Center’s medical director Ayesha Peets Talbot, MD, FAAP, the only certified obesity physician in Bermuda, will address the students about the dangers of childhood obesity on September 13, 2016 at 10:00am.

“Following the lunch event, Drs. Garcia-Banigan and Peets Talbot will join Bermuda Hospitals Board Medical Education Department to discuss the trends, causes, and treatment of childhood obesity with the nursing staff at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital at 1:00 p.m.

“In addition, on Wednesday, September 14 and Thursday, September 15, LHMC’s director of medical and surgical weight loss program Amanda Powell, MD, and surgeon Dmitry Nepomnayshy, MD will join the Bermuda Hospitals Board Medical Education Department for a “Lunch and Learn” continuing medical education lecture for physicians on the latest techniques and breakthroughs in both the surgical and medical treatment of obesity.”
