Minister: Solutions To Address The Challenges

March 11, 2017

“It is my hope that members of our community will partner with us in the spirit of collaboration as we work to seek solutions to address the challenges that we face,” Minister of National Security Jeffrey Baron said.

Minister Baron said, “Within the last week, our community has once again been terrorized by violence. And tragically, this past weekend our community lost another young man – Raymond Butterfield. Our sincerest condolences are extended to Mr. Butterfield’s family and friends at this difficult time.

“Sadly, this week, another young man – a teenager – was shot and is currently in the ICU.

“Throughout this week I have met with the Police Commissioner to discuss our concerns about the increase in these violent incidents.

“As it relates to the shooting, the Police are actively investigating the matter – and I echo their calls for anyone who may be able to assist the Police to please come forward and share what you know.

“Earlier this month, I announced multiple strategies that will make it harder for dangerous individuals to use violence on another member of our community. But clearly, we recognise that more must be done to safeguard and protect our citizens. Government cannot do it alone.

“The Ministry of National Security continues to progress with implementing Operation Ceasefire, a community-collaborative initiative that has proven to be effective in curbing violence.

“I recognize that all of Bermuda is extremely weary of these continuing incidences of gun violence and anti-social behaviour.

“And it is my hope that members of our community will partner with us in the spirit of collaboration as we work to seek solutions to address the challenges that we face.”
