The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Bermuda is getting set to present ‘The Wizard of Oz’ in October, with auditions for the show to be held from June 2 to 4.
A spokesperson said, “The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Bermuda is delighted to announce that it will be producing The Wizard of Oz between Thursday October 5 through Saturday October 14 at the Earl Cameron Theatre in City Hall.
“Following the success of last year’s production of The Magic of The Musicals, the Society had a very difficult task to select a worthy successor to that production. After much deliberation, the Society chose The Wizard of Oz.
“This is a much loved musical, in which a Kansas farm girl travels over the rainbow to discover the magical power of home. The musical has been entertaining audiences for generations.
“This production features such well known songs as “Over The Rainbow”, “Munchkinland [Ding Dong The Witch is Dead”, ”If I Only Had A Brain/A Heart/The Nerve”, “We’re Off To See The Wizard [Follow The Yellow Brick Road]”, “The Jitterbug” and “The Merry Old Land of Oz”, plus a few new songs.
“The production will give the audience the opportunity of seeing what promises to be an outstanding set, designed by Cleo Pettitt. Cleo has designed sets for such G&S shows as Pirates of Penzance, South Pacific, Jesus Christ Superstar and Oliver! She has been challenged to ensure The Yellow Brick Road leads to a successful and memorable show.
John Barnett, president of the Gilbert & Sullivan Society’s executive committee, said: “For 57 years, G&S has brought a wide range of hit musicals and concerts to the stage in Bermuda. This year, we wanted to produce a musical which was very well known and which would give many young people in Bermuda the opportunity to be on the stage for the first time.
“The Wizard of Oz fulfills that objective as we expect to have two teams of 20 young people performing on alternate nights, as we did for The Magic of The Musicals. This will mean that we will be looking for talented young people [over the age of 8] who will become Munchkins for 10 days”.
“Auditions for this memorable show will be held on Friday June 2 to Sunday June 4. In addition to adults and young people we will be scouring Bermuda to find a Cairns Terrier to play the part of Toto.
“Please contact Deborah Smith-Joell at 735-1547 for audition dates and times.”
