BAEYC: “Celebrating Our Youngest Learners”

April 24, 2017

The Bermuda Association for the Education of Young Children [BAEYC] is inviting everyone to participate in their annual celebrations of  ’The Week of the Young Child’ being held from April 22 through April 28 with the theme “Celebrating Our Youngest Learners.”

Speaking at today’s official opening, Junior Minister of Education, Leah Scott said, “Good Morning and thank you for the honor of opening up the Week of the Young Child on behalf of the Bermuda Association for the Education of Young Children.

“The purpose of the Week of the Young Child is to bring public awareness to the needs of our young children and their families. It is also to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs, such as the Child Development Project and to celebrate those that educate and invest their lives in our young children.

“As a society, we must invest in the emotional, social and physical development of our young children, because what happens in early childhood, whether good or bad, can impact a child for a lifetime. The early childhood years [birth through age 8] lay the foundation for children’s success in school and later life, and optimizing the early years of children’s lives is the best investment we can make as a society in ensuring their future success.

“Never before have the needs of young children and their families been more pressing. We recognize that and want to do all that we can to ensure that, as a community, and as a country we will work to better meet the needs of all young children and their families.

“So today begins a week of celebration of our youngest learners, starting with

  • Music Monday – sing, dance, celebrate, and learn through the arts
  • Tasty Tuesday – healthy eating and fitness at home and school
  • Reading Wednesday – work together, build together, learn together
  • Artsy Thursday – think, problem solve, create
  • Family Friday – sharing family stories
  • Sharing Saturday – giving to others

“It is our responsibility to create opportunities for our young learners. I am committed to doing what I can to ensure that each and every one of our young learners is able to experience the type of environment that will promote their early learning. And with that, I declare the Week of the Young Child open.”
