BNAA President: “I Am Very Proud Of Team”

April 18, 2017

We won two medals and nine personal bests at the Carifta Track & Field Games, as “these athletes fought hard” and “I am very proud of our team,” BNAA President Donna Raynor said, with Ms Raynor also confirming that Bermuda has bid for the 2020 Games.

Ms Raynor said, “The final day of competition was good for Team Bermuda. We did not come out with any medals, but achieved three personal bests.

“The day began with Elisha Darrell in the U20 boys High Jump. Going into the event Elisha had a personal best of 2.05m. He jumped 2.11m placing 4th overall and the winning jump was a new Carifta record of 2.22m. That was fantastic for him.

“Then we had the U18 boys 4x400m with Deneo Brangman, Suresh Black, Clevonte Lodge and Lejaun Matthews running a fantastic time of 3.22.51 to place them in the finals.

“Next up was Aaron Jacobs who had already run a personal best to get into the finals, and he ran another personal best of 1.58.60 placing 6th overall, but ran with a lot of heart. Then in our final event, the boys final 4×400, our athletes did us proud placing 5th overall.

“We came out with two medals and had nine personal bests,” Ms Raynor continued. “These athletes fought hard, but as usual at these games Jamaica stole the show. We took a young team, but as I stated they will give 100% and they did. I am very proud of them and the effort they gave.

“Bermuda has bid for the 2020 Games and is up against Curacao who have also bid. We will find out later this year who will win the bid. Also next year the age groups will be moved back to U17 and U20.

“This is for various reasons, but the most important the numbers with the current system in the U20 the numbers were beginning to dwindle especially the females.

“All in all this was a good Carifta Games for us and I am very proud of our team.”
