Court: Prisoner Pleads Guilty To Assault

April 27, 2017

Appearing in Magistrates Court, a 36-year-old man — who is currently serving a prison sentence — pleaded guilty to unlawfully assaulting another prisoner at Westgate.

Shomari Virgil pleaded guilty to unlawfully assaulting someone at Westgate Correctional Facility in August 2016.

The Crown Prosecutor told the Magistrate that in August 2016, Mr Virgil had assaulting the prisoner, resulting in him being injured.

The action had been captured by the Westgate CCTV system and Corrections Officers had quickly intervened.

In Court, Mr Virgil’s defence lawyer told the Magistrate that the action involved only two quick punches and was all in seconds.

Mr Virgil’s lawyer asked that no additional prison time be handed down as Mr Virgil was trying to better himself and was taking advantage of an opportunity to get a GED; and was doing this in order to better support his children.

The Magistrate then handed down a two year prison sentence.
