Digicel Launches Connect2Sailing Programme

April 17, 2017

With the America’s Cup fast approaching, Digicel Bermuda announced today the launch of its #Connect2sailing programme – aimed at bringing youths closer to the technology that fuels the world’s most anticipated boating event, which this year is being staged in Bermuda.

As an Official Event Supplier to Land Rover BAR, the British Challenger for the 35th America’s Cup, the #Connect2sailing programme will see Digicel bring nearly 700 final year middle school students to the 11th Hour Racing Exploration Zone at the Land Rover BAR team base, to learn about the technology behind the sport and its sustainability practices.

The 11th Hour Racing Exploration Zone offers a unique, behind-the-scenes experience, with hands-on interactive exhibits. The showcase was developed to build understanding around the technology used in the America’s Cup and awareness of environmental issues and innovative solutions through lessons on materials, renewable energy, invasive species and ocean plastics.

“This is a great opportunity for students who will get a 360 view of the sport – both as spectator and insiders as they will be getting access to inner workings of the crux of the operation,” said Digicel and BTC’s CEO, Robin Seale.

He added, “Digicel is committed to youth development in a number of areas, including sports and technology innovation, so we’re very happy to be partnering with Land Rover BAR to give them this amazing experience.”

Sir Ben Ainslie, Team Principal and Skipper of Land Rover BAR commented, “Sailors are some of the most natural advocates for the health of the oceans. I was inspired to make sustainability central to what we do here at Land Rover BAR and 11th Hour Racing gives us the means to embed sustainability within everything we do.

“I’d like to thank Digicel for giving young students the chance to connect to the America’s Cup and learn about the technologies that help our boat fly and hear more about our goal to become the most sustainable sports team.”
