PLP St George’s Candidates On Area “Neglect”

May 16, 2017

[Updated with photos] PLP candidates for St. Georges are today [May 16] expressing concern at what they are describing as “neglect,” on the Wellington Back Road area.

PLP Candidate for Constituency #2 Kim Swan said, “Despite being highlighted by the OBA in the leadup to the last election, to date, little attention has been shown to the Wellington Back Road area where vegetation & shrubbery overgrowth on the railway trail and former golf course has made the area unsightly and a prime target for illegal dumping. In addition, the once golf clubhouse area on the boundary of constituency #1 & #2 remains an eyesore and is on the doorstep of seniors who live in the nearby Anchorage Apartments.”

PLP Candidate for Constituency #1 Senator Renee Ming remarked, “Many of the residents we talk to in this area are deeply concerned at how this area has been neglected and worry that while it is already impacting on their quality of life it may also affect property values. We want to highlight these concerns and do our part to address them as quickly as possible,”

Kim Swan added, “This matter has been reported to both the Parks Department and Works and Engineering with the hope that there will be a clean up and clearing out in the first instance and the area being placed on a regular maintenance timetable.”

Senator Ming concluded, “This, like so many other issues requires leadership and action. For too long when it comes to issues that matter in the East End, whether its unemployment, pathways to status, attempts to shut down Lamb Foggo, crime in the Old Town or illegal dumping, there has been silence from those paid by the taxpayer to provide leadership and a voice to the people. St. George’s deserves better. We will continue to ensure that St. George’s is represented and that there is a voice for the people who live and call the east end home.”

  1. Warlord says:

That’s all you got is shrubbery.Meanwhile yet another announcement by the OBA down the road with another new cruise ship and new ferry service.

    • Us St Georgians says:

Cruise ship and new hotel in St George, we are pleased but will not be hoodwinked into voting OBA.

  2. stumped says:

Don’t worry Kenny will fix remember he did it by himself before

  3. steve says:

NEGLECT? THANKS PLP FOR ABANDONING THE EAST END AND THEN BEGGING FOR OUR VOTES!

    • Wondering says:

Mr. Swan is complaining about the former golf course when the PLP closed it down and literally blew up the hotel! You also booked no cruise ships!

Mr. Swan, when you start canvasing have a chart for the St. George voters showing the following.

      1) Number of Cruise ships in St George PLP vs OBA
      2) Hotels that were blown up vs those being built PLP vs OBA
      3) Golf Courses opened vs closed PLP vs OBA
      4) Businesses opened and closed PLP vs OBA

I think you might be surprised at what you find.

Voters. Do not give away your vote to anyone – OBA or PLP without them giving you the facts and showing you what they have done. Most are coached on how to talk to voters so they will all tell you what they think you want to hear. Don’t vote for someone just because you know them, or your parents always voted for “party x” or even because you are a member. I have voted for OBA, PLP and OBA in the past. I don’t necessarily make my vote known to others, but I always vote for me and my childrens future.

      • St George Voter says:

I have voted for Mr Swan since 1998. He worked hard for St George and he, even though wasn’t elected last election, has been there whenever me or my family needed him. We are so happy he’s running once again and we will vote for Mr Kim Swan.

        • Cowpoly says:

And what has Kim Swan stated that he will bring to St. GEORGE’S? Kim has had his day as an MP.
St. GEORGE’S does not need talk we need results, like what we have now.

        • Guessing says:

          Cindy Swan, is that you?

          • Reality Check 2017 says:

            @Guessing:

That is just rude and low. Get a life.

            • rumsoak says:

as a person who has a few years under his belt , the Swan family is an upstanding family

        • Toleratate says:

          Since 1998 you say????
          lol,

          • mmmm says:

some may call the years of social and economic collapse from 1998-2012 bermudas ‘golden age’

  4. NCM says:

There’s a whole lot of hot air coming out of Alaska Hall these days. Funny thing is most of it is from former UBP members. You can’t make this stuff up! #Bermudaisanotherworld.

    • Non party member says:

I voted for Kim Swan when he was independent , UBP and will definitely be voting for him next election! Hold your head high Swanie. He is transparent and an honest broker.

      • Just the facts says:

He sounds like a great guy…he just needs to have a little pride in his constituency and learn how to pick up some trash. I know a guy who can teach him…

  5. wahoo says:

If they are worried about property values right now tell them to vote OBA. It is so easy to complain but it is even easier to say, “well what did you do for all your time in government?”. The plp are desperate and will tell you what you want to hear so just keep asking them the difficult questions, who, why, what and when?

    • clearasmud says:

“The plp are desperate and will tell you what you want to hear”

You are right of course that is also true of the present government. case in point that claim from the Premier about 2000 jobs being created despite evidence to the contrary.

  6. Jorge says:

Because of PLP…. that Golf course has been abandoned and neglected. ObA are focusing on fixing the problems left by PLP. Overgrown shrubbery can take a back seat for now.

    • VJ says:

I went hiking last year, and was shocked at this disgraceful dumping ground. I PERSONALLLY made a call, and was told that it would be checked out. If this was in Dockyard where the America’s Cup is being held, it would have picked up a long time ago. Regardless of who is drawing attention to this matter, it needs to be cleaned up.

    • Toleratate says:

Exactly, so let me understand… all that the OBA is doing and has done; their complaint is about a bunch of idiots who dump trash and the OBA has not had it picked up?
This is as about as useful a statement as the 2025 Plan.

  7. Trump supporter says:

Well if the golf club didn’t get knocked down so hastily it wouldn’t look like that.
And guess what the OBA didn’t do it.
    Next Ballon of hot air.

  8. Trump supporter says:

    Balloon.

  9. Bermuda gal says:

Can’t blame the government for this. Blame fellow Bermudians who don’t care enough to dispose of their garbage in the correct manner.

    • clearasmud says:

      Spot on!

    • Michelle says:

Gov is a representation of the people so if the gov doesnt care, what does that say about them

  10. casadanale says:

The PLP / UBP have a short memory. It was under their watch that the golf course was demolished and neglected. Now fast forward. They want us to vote for them. The ONA are fixing this eyesore as we speak so they will be getting my vote. Never again vote the PLP.

    • Say Whaat says:

The ONA? New party? What are they fixing? Proof please? The AC isn’t in St. George’s.

      • Just the facts says:

I’m going to assume you are being sarcastic: what are they fixing??? Seriously? Have you not seen what the OBA is doing for St. Geo? Clearly you are being sarcastic.

  11. David Henry says:

It’s a shame that some of us Onions disrespect our beautiful island like this, but this is not some major unsolvable issue. Does the government have to do every bloody thing for us?!
Even if the answer is yes, then why don’t these MP’s round up a bunch of volunteers and/or pay for a trucking company to tow it away. It’d be a good look- certainly a better look than whining :)

    • Kim Smith says:

The absence of civic studies has lead to the electorate thinking that their job is done when they represent an individual/party to represent them on governmental issues. NO… for one thing, we are each and all responsible for obeying rules and regulations and that includes the illegal dumping of trash in places other than the dump. Such actions are not penalised because the politicians want to be reelected and so they won’t deal with any issues that jeopardise their serving long enough to secure their life long pension.

  12. Lois Frederick says:

Bad idea plp. Everyone is fully aware of the negect and disregard you showed the East End for years. The plp cannot take credit for any of the rebirth happening right now. St. George’s is rising from the ashes no thanks to you. Your press release only reminds us of your failures.

    • Michelle says:

And now the OBA is in charge and nothing improved so what power do they really have?

  13. 32n64w says:

So if the PLP candidates really care about this accumulation of debris and truly want to demonstrate “leadership and action” rather than simply politicking, please let us know how much of the mess they personally cleaned up? Or do they prefer their hands roaming across a keyboard issuing a press release rather than getting dirty keeping Bermuda beautiful?

  14. wahoo says:

People dumping trash is a social issue you should have fixed that you hypocrites.

    • Michelle says:

The oba is in charge so THEY should have fixed it. They are the representatives for us so set a better precedent

  15. Triangle Drifter says:

Putting the politics of who did what & who has not done what aside for a moment, what is really disgraceful is all of that trash. It did not arrive there all by itself. disgusting lazy people put it there. Add to that there are people who watched them do it & did not say anything or lift a finger to clean it up.

    • Say Whaat says:

You think people watched them do it? What you think that people sat there 24 hours and just let them do it? Idiot!

  16. Powder says:

Well, that press release didn’t have the desired result, did it?

  17. Kevin says:

Mercy …amnesia has set in the PLP did

    Close the Golf course
    Knock down the Club House
    Close the police Station
    Close the Fire Station
failed to assist in funding the corporation after cutting off their income
imploded a hotel because a new one was promised
made no attempt to attract a cruise line

Do I really need to say what is happening under the OBA

Kim you have never been elected in a constituency that wasn’t a strong hold and you won’t win here …..

    • Say Whaat says:

You don’t even live in St. George’s. 4 votes does not make St George’s an OBA stronghold.

      • Politricks says:

But yet you cannot deny the facts above…

The OBA has done wonders for St. Georges whilst the PLP couldn’t have cared any less about what was happening to the Old Towne.

  18. Ronnie Viera says:

It is certainly a disgusting mess and as are the people who dumped the garbage, but instead of trying to gain cheap political points why not organize a clean up? The KBB had one this past weekend and yet I haven’t seen any FB posts from the PLP showing any of their members doing anything. Perhaps they were out but I sense that we would have had a post with a picture. Certainly we have seen other articles from them of late.

Bottom line Kim, in a true spirit of wanting to help the community, contact the OBA members in the area and once and for all let’s see the two parties working together.

    • Compare Notes? says:

Looks like some of the people in St Georges don’t care for their own community if they are too lazy to take this junk to the airport dump. I say take down the model numbers and serial numbers listed on the appliances and take that info to the local distributors or to the manufacturer themselves. they can use the serial numbers back to the original purchaser and fine them, or the trucking company they hire to dump their belongings.

I believe that any person that uses a commercial truck to dump garbage should be fined heavily and should loose their permit. Anyone using a private vehicle should be fined and lose their licence. A licence and vehicle is a privilege and not the right of these filthy PIGS.

  19. cpm says:

Another boring press release from plp

  20. cpm says:

plp trying to ruin a happy day for the East End

  21. Come on now. says:

Plp, come on. A far more useful stance would be hey we have organised a Neighbour hood clean up. But that would require actually doing something and not just making complaints.

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Hands up anyone in the PLP who has gotten off their complaining backside & actually done some cleanup work anywhere without having a media camera nearby.

      Very very few.

      • Say Whaat says:

How would you know if there are no pictures. Keep ASSuming with your racist self!

  22. aceboy says:

Go have a look at the grass area just outside the wall at the Zebra’s field. Trash from one end to the other strewn all over the ground and yet plenty of trash cans. It is not governments fault that people who hang out in that area don’t care what it looks like and who are happy to live around trash.

  23. O.M.G says:

Mr swan I suggest you get some of your candidates together and the people that live in the area that is making the bloody mess go clean it up. Give us all a break. All mouth, take some responsibility PLEASE. Kenny has been trying to keep that golf course clean for years have not seen any of you down there trying to help. We just had KBB were any of you cleaning down there. Probably not because it was for the AC right give a break. Ask mr Burt is that where the two Bermudas are.

  24. Seriously says:

Take a hard look at Kim Swan and Renee Ming. Do they look like they would rally a group and clean up? Ridiculous for the two of them to make trash a government issue. If you care about your constituents show them how to clean up their neighborhoods and keep watch on people who litter. After all if the PLP were the Government would you be blamed for it?

  25. sandgrownan says:

It’s amateur hour! We all know neglect in St. Geo. is a PLP mess. Everyone knows that much.

But Kim, it’s weak, you need to get “minority OBA government” in there and “two Bermudas” to get on the radar.

6/10 for effort. Must try harder.

    • Michelle says:

0/10 effort on your comment, PLP isnt even in power, st. george is OBA territory, this is on them sorry

  26. Kim Smith says:

What, no comment about the people who would have put all that trash in those places? Just another opportunity to blame the OBA for other people’s actions. Your intentions are shining bright these days.

    • Say Whaat says:

So are the OBA’s intentions. It’s political war right now.

  27. Joe Bloggs says:

There is no excuse for dumping rubbish like that, but I cannot help but thing that things would not be as bad if the St. George’s Golf Club had not been closed. Certainly, my son and I would have enjoyed a few rounds there like we used to do!

  28. Kim Smith says:

I bought a book recently called “I’m Right and You’re An Idiot” and I can hardly wait to read it. The summary says “Just as the natural environment can be polluted, so too can public discourse. “I’m Right and You’re an Idiot: The Toxic State of Public Discourse and How to Clean it Up” examines the sorry state of today’s public square, showing how polluted, polarized conversations discourage people from taking action on critical issues such as climate change, and demonstrating how we can clear the air and become more powerful and effective communicators.” We could start with a rule banning attacks/comments made under a pen name. This allows the writer the ability to spew whatever they will without even being identified as the attacker.

  29. tbt says:

Why did the neighbors let this get the way it is? I would never let people dump in my neighborhood. If it became that bad, I would go and clean it up myself with s group of friend. Now that you have waited years it’s going to cost thousands to remove all of the rubbish. It is hardly the OBA’s fault. I go for a lot of walks in St Georges. and the old hotel is a dumping ground for St George folks as well.

    • TF says:

The OBA puts “work” into St. George but doesn’t care for areas that dont make profit. That shows what they care about

    • Michelle says:

St george is their project so they should take better care of all it rather than just the areas that make them profit

  30. Ok says:

The UBP neglected the lower income communities of Bermuda including public schools and senior homes…the oba is following the same pattern.. make the outside look good.. hiding the real inhuman state that many bermudians endure.

However, with information, the underclass is harder to hide..

..in my opinion regardless of the good the OBA does..they will be judged by how they treated the less fortunate..

Today their record for the middle – underclass is poor.

    Everything that glitters isn’t gold.

They will be voted out, in my opinion.

  31. Caitlyn says:

Really the trash in the picture is not polictal!!! This is individuals no no pride and disposing of their trash for domone else to pick.Plain and simple.Accountability!
