July 14, 2017

The Reading Clinic [Registered Charity #126] said they are honoured to be the recipient of a grant in the amount of $10,000.00 from global insurer and reinsurer AXIS Capital Holdings Limited.

This grant has been provided in order to assist The Reading Clinic in the provision of assessment services and tutoring for children with learning differences, as well as to support the Clinic’s programmes in general.

The Reading Clinic’s mission is to promote literacy and numeracy in Bermuda. It provides assessments, tutoring and related interventions for children with dyslexia and other learning difficulties. Through family and school consultations, referrals and advocacy, and by professional development, it fosters the use of research-based practices to empower individuals who learn differently.

Dr Glenn Faries, Executive Director said: “In the past fiscal year, demand for our services increased substantially – we were up by 34%, both in terms of numbers of students as well as hours of direct service provided, with significant gains being seen in all four of our major programmes.

“It is imperative that we do our best to be able to stay abreast of this increased demand and continue to meet this need. The financial climate in Bermuda continues to be challenging. More than 50% of our students require bursary assistance. It is crucial that these students in need receive the services which allow them to develop skills that will enable them to succeed in the community.

“The unfortunate consequences of unaddressed learning issues, such as low self-esteem, delinquency, truancy, high drop-out rate, and the tendency to become involved in criminal activity can be avoided, thanks to the generous philanthropy of Axis Capital Holdings Limited, and other like-minded corporations, individuals and foundations.”

He added: “Our Core Reading Programme and ICAN Math programme continue to have a positive impact for primary school students who learn differently. Our I-PLAY Programme, targeted towards providing vital Early Childhood screening and intervention for children in preschool, provides emerging literacy skills and phonological awareness for children who are struggling in this area. And our diagnostic and assessment programme allows us to determine exactly where each child’s challenges are and what intervention will best address their learning differences.

“It is only with the help of our community that The Reading Clinic can provide the programmes and services that we do. We are deeply grateful to Axis Capital Holdings Limited for their contribution.”
