Meet Bermuda Football Player Zekiah Lewis
In the latest in a series of profiles of football players who will be part of the team representing Bermuda at CONCACAF Caribbean Women’s Under-20 Qualifier that will take place on July 19, July 21, and July 23 at National Sports Center, we spotlight 16-year-old Zekiah Lewis.
1. How does it feel to have been selected for such an elite squad?
It feels good, especially since I have only been playing football for a short period of time and being able to play in a tournament such as this is very encouraging, so I am pretty excited.
2. How will you prepare for the competition?
I will watch more football and learn more about our competition so that I can know more about both. I also plan to also do more exercise to improve my endurance.
3. When did you start playing football and what prompted you to start?
I started playing football this year in January because I am going away to school in September and I wanted to play football away so I knew I had to start here so I wouldn’t go away and be unprepared. It is really something I just decided to do because I knew I would like it.
4. Do you feel that girls’ and women’s’ football gets enough support from the local community?
No, I think even though football is very popular in Bermuda, the guys get way more support than girls.
5. Which Bermudian athlete, coach or sporting figure do you admire most and why?
I admire my brother, Zeiko Lewis, he is a football player for Bermuda and the New York Red Bulls in the MLS. He inspires me not just in football but in other sports as well and I really love him.
6. How does it feel to get the opportunity to play in your own country and in front of a home crowd?
I think it is a huge opportunity because we will be able to show Bermuda what we are capable of and maybe this will increase our level of support and I am really excited to see what the outcome is.
