PGTC Open & Bacardi Seniors Cup Results

September 12, 2017

The 2017 PGTC Open presented by Martini and Bacardi Seniors Cup tournament concluded at Pomander Gate Tennis Club over the weekend.

In the Open Women’s Final, Charmaine Thomas took on Jahzuena Bradshaw-Douglas in a grueling 2hr 50 minute battle which saw fine hitting from both, and elegant serving from Jahzuena in her second final at Pomander Gate.

With considerable tenacity and after narrowly losing the first set, the honours eventually went to Thomas. Bradshaw-Douglas, with a little more experience, could easily win this Martini sponsored event in future years. Final score 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

In the Open Men’s Singles, the powerful side to side hitting from Sam Butler had Bermuda No. 1 Gavin Manders scurrying across the court retrieving the best his opponent had to offer. However, Butler finally clinched the first set 6-4.

Time and again Butler had to restart the offensive as Manders defended, and defended often, forcing Butler to play a hurried shot into the net. The final two sets had the same pattern with Butler becoming increasingly frustrated by his inability to finish off a rally. With 6-2, 6-0 wins in the second and third sets Manders rightly asserted his authority as #1 in Bermuda. Final score: 4-6, 6-2, 6-0

On the Bacardi side of the tournament, the canny combination of Steve Bean and Darion Thomas were outstanding in their strategy to overcome brothers Earl and Erwin Leader in the Men’s Super Seniors on the final day.

For the women, a singles match lasting over two hours in the midday sun and humidity had Louisa Freisenbruch finally overcoming Rhonda Caza in the third set tiebreak in the Women’s Senior Singles Final to finish an excellent Bacardi/Martini Tournament.
