Govt: ‘School Bus Routes Will Be Prioritized’

December 29, 2017

“Morning and afternoon commuter [or revenue] runs that incorporate school bus routes will be prioritized starting next week, as the Department of Public Transportation continues to work with the limited number of buses available,” the Ministry said this evening.

“While the emphasis will be on accommodating primary and middle school routes, the regular runs will also be available to senior school students. Unfortunately, dedicated school buses cannot be offered at this time,” a spokesperson said.

“Circumstances will improve as new buses arrive [starting in January with others to follow] and existing buses in the fleet are overhauled.

“Bus users are encouraged to bookmark the bus scheduling pages on the government portal, or, subscribe to receive bus cancellation notifications by email.

“An RFP for fleet replacement is drafted and is being reviewed prior to issuance. This is a longer term project that will be undertaken as budget allows.”

In simple terms, have the new schedule reflect what can be sustained and reduce the costs. It will never happen. It’s like the Post Office. Past its time but runs at a loss to safeguard jobs.

Although the PLP didn’t create the problem, hopefully they will be the government that fixes it.

Governments change, civil service administration continues on, mostly unchanged. Take the US for example. Federal workforce pay and benefits are completely out of whack with the private sector. A 2011 American Enterprise Institute study found federal employees receive wages 14% higher than what similar workers in the private sector earn. These huge payouts are the result of automatic increases, bonuses, seniority rules and gold-plated pensions that are all but extinct in the private sector. Now factor in benefits, and the compensation premium leaps to 61%. And finally, factor in how that federal workforce is also shielded by rules that make it practically impossible to fire or discipline poor/inefficient employees, to relocate talent, or to reassign duties. Wait……Sound familiar?
