Nominate Local Athletes For The Sports Awards

With the 37th Annual Sports Awards scheduled for Saturday March 17th, 2018, the Department of Youth, Sport & Recreation are currently accepting nomination submissions for the 2017 Sports Awards.

These awards present an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our athletes and those persons and organizations that assist and have made significant and sustained contributions to our sporting environment.

There are nine categories of recognition and they are as follows:

Achievement Award

This award is presented to a competitive athlete who has excelled in national and/or international competition during the awards year.

Appreciation Award

This award is presented to sports bodies who conduct national amateur games in Bermuda. It is also presented to clubs/organizations, sporting promotion groups and companies having demonstrated community responsiveness by pioneering and implementing a community sports programme. The programme must show evidence of continuity, growth and development for a minimum of five years.

Female Athlete of the Year

This award is presented to the female athlete who has excelled in competitions. She should have advanced at least to the final grouping [round] or a position deemed equivalent in a recognized international/world competition, or first in a national competition. The athlete must have demonstrated an obvious programme of maintained excellence and conduct that embody the ideals of the sport.

Female Junior Athlete of the Year

This award is presented to the most outstanding female junior athlete who has excelled in competitions. She should have advanced at least to the final grouping [round] or a position deemed equivalent in a recognized international/world competition, or first in a national competition. The junior athlete must have demonstrated an obvious programme of maintained excellence and conduct that embody the ideals of the sport.

Junior Athlete Achievement Award

This award is presented to a competitive junior athlete who has excelled in national and/or international competition during the awards year.

Male Athlete of the Year 

This award is presented to the male athlete who has excelled in competitions. He should have advanced at least to the final grouping [round] or a position deemed equivalent in a recognized international/world competition, or first in a national competition. The athlete must have demonstrated an obvious programme of maintained excellence and conduct that embody the ideals of the sport.

Male Junior Athlete of the Year

This award is presented to the most outstanding male junior athlete who has excelled in competitions. He should have advanced at least to the final grouping [round] or a position deemed equivalent in a recognized international/world competition, or first in a national competition. The junior athlete must have demonstrated an obvious programme of maintained excellence and conduct that embody the ideals of the sport.

Special Achievement Award

This award is presented to an individual other than an athlete who has made a significant and sustained contribution to sport in a voluntary capacity at the national level, e.g. sports administration, organization or medicine, etc. A minimum of 5 years contribution is required.

Sport Citation

This award is presented to an individual, team, club or governing body of sport who has distinguished themselves both past and present. This award is open to all levels of achievement, competition, participation and/or contribution, e.g. organization of a major sporting event, distinguished sporting career, etc.

All nomination forms are due by Friday January 5th, 2018 and can to be submitted to the Youth, Sport and Recreation office or sent electronically to Jekon Edness [jaedness@gov.bm] or Erica Woods [elwoods@gov.bm].

Forms must have supporting documentation [newspaper articles, pictures, certificates etc.] when submitted.
