63 Riders Compete In Mountain Bike Race

March 12, 2018

The Eighth race of the 2017-2018 Furniture Walk Mountain Bike Race Series presented by Gubinelli Mendoza Wines, Arch Insurance & Becks Beer took place this weekend at Hog Bay with a total of 63 riders.

“Hog Bay run clockwise has a long climb to the summit, then a couple of very technical decent lines take you along the waterside before three short tough climbs bring you to the top of the dreaded gravel hill with its ruts an loose surface to fly back down to the start,” the organisers said.

“Charles Swart popped in, fully prepared to just spectate as he is saving his legs for a gruelling eight day mtb marathon in South Africa along with fellow racers Chris Roque and Dennis Fagundo. Charles Dunstan will also be competing for Bermuda. However, Mr Swart was persuaded to carefully run his fifth race in A class uncontested.

“The novice men had a bit of a shake up with a visiting Doctor trouncing the field. Hamish Reid finished a lap ahead of Simon Hanrahan with Cesar Oliveira coming Third.

“Young Gordon Smith, the points leader in the boys 12 and under, opted to try out the 13 to 15 class where his brother Manning is leading the points. Both Smiths proved they knew their way around the course and amazed the riders and spectators alike with their downhill skills. At the finish, Manning was first, Keiran Malott came second and 10 year old Gordon grabbed third place.
