Senior School Track Championships Held

The Berkeley Institute won the 2018 Bermuda School Sports Federation Senior School Track Meet with a ten point win over Saltus Grammar School.

Berkeley used a strong relay performance to edge past Saltus with 541.5 points. Saltus finished second on 531.5, while CedarBridge Academy finished third with 529.

Two records fell in the 400 meter events, first Taylor Hines shattered the Under 16 Girls 400 meter record in a time of 57.42. The Bermuda High School student broke a record set in 1979 by Gina Evans of 59.10 seconds.

Berkeley’s Clevonte Lodge then broke the Under 16 Boys Record in the very next race. Lodge finished with a time of 50.93 seconds beating the previous record held by Ryan Furbert for the past ten years.

Saltus’ Jessie Marshall was named the Under 16 Champion Girl after winning the 800, 1500 and 3000 meter races. School mate Za’Kayza Parsons finished second after winning the 100 meters and Long Jump while finishing second in the 200 meters behind Hines.

Samuel Darrell from Berkeley and Nicholas Narraway shared the Under 16 Boys title. Darrell won the High Jump and finished second in the Long and Triple Jump events. Saltus’ Narraway won the 1500 and 3000 meters while finishing third in the 800 meters.

The Over 16 Girls title was also shared by two CARIFTA athletes. Sakari Famous from Berkeley won the High Jump, Long Jump and Javelin events, while Ashely Irby from Saltus won the 800,1500 and 3000 meter races. Bridgette Basden from CedarBridge was close to the winners after she claimed Gold in the 100 and 200 but finished second to Famous in the Long Jump.

The over 16 Boys title was claimed by Deneo Brangman. The CedarBridge Academy student won the sprinting Triple after winning the 100, 200 and 400 meter sprints. Cameron Coffey finished close behind after the Saltus student won the Javelin and finished second in the Discus and Shot Put.
