IRM Set To Host Hurricane Session With BWS

May 24, 2018

IRM Bermuda Group is getting set to host its third annual IRM session with the Bermuda Weather Service [BWS], along with members from the National Disaster Coordination team within Bermuda’s Ministry of National Security regarding the upcoming hurricane season.

The event will be held on May 30 from 8.00am to 9.30am at Wellesley House with presenters Steve Cosham and James Dodgson.

A spokesperson said, “The 2018 Atlantic hurricane season is just days away and forecasts are coming thick and fast with different meteorological opinions on just how much tropical storm and hurricane activity there will be this year.

“The Weather Company [a business owned by tech giant IBM] has released its prediction for the season, with an average forecast for 13 named tropical storms, 6 hurricanes and 2 major hurricanes of Category 3 or greater during the 2018 Atlantic season.

“Artemis average forecast for the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season remains 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes.

“IRM Bermuda Group will host its third annual IRM session with the Bermuda Weather Service [BWS] along with members from the National Disaster Coordination team within Bermuda’s Ministry of National Security. This is an opportunity to ask questions to both the National Disaster Coordinator and BWS on any aspect of Bermuda disaster preparedness plans and BWS predictions for the upcoming hurricane season. This is definitely an opportunity that can help better prepare your company and staff.

“Some of the topics that will be covered are a review of last season and how it faired with previous ones; predictions for this season, based on guidance from other ‘external’ agencies such as Colorado State and NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center [note that Bermuda Weather Service does not in itself provide hurricane season outlook products. We take our lead from NOAA]; a reminder of general climatology for the Atlantic hurricane season updates on NOAA’s National Hurricane Center products for the 2018 season; and a reminder of Bermuda Weather Services products including definitions of our watches/warnings and an overview of our Tropical Update Bulletins.

“Mr. Steve Cosham is the National Disaster Coordinator and National Events Planning Coordinator for the Ministry of National Security. This post requires him to coordinate the activities of the Emergency Measures Organisation [EMO] and all National Disaster Plans.

“During hurricanes he will coordinate the activities of all EMO agencies to ensure they are working to the same common operating picture, which will create an environment that will allow Bermuda to recover in the minimum time with maximum efficiency. Specifically he will coordinate and stimulate the various national disaster planning processes across Government and the various agencies that are members of the EMO.”
