May 1, 2018

The Ministry of National Security announced that it will host the 2018 Digital Citizenship Conference on May 7, 2018.

“The Digital Citizenship Conference is the first of its kind, and seeks to share positive resources and techniques with Bermuda’s young people aimed at helping them engage in safe online behavior,” the Ministry said.

“Organised by the Department of ICT Policy and Innovation Cybertips Initiative, the conference takes place at Ruth Season James Auditorium, starting at 8:30 a.m.

“The day’s event will feature student leaders from middle and high schools, who along with industry experts will lead breakout sessions, workshops and panel discussions about Cyberbullying, Social Media, Parent Awareness and many other topics.

“Educators and parents will be also able to take advantage of workshops and panel discussions led and moderated by students in the evening.”

The Minister of National Security Wayne Caines said today, “Our young people interact daily using a variety of online platforms, and it’s essential that we provide them with the necessary tools to ensure their safety in today’s digital world.

“We want to ensure they know how to protect themselves from such situations as cyberbullying and online predators. Ultimately, we want all those who attend this conference, including parents and educators, to leave feeling knowledgeable and empowered about navigating in today’s digital environment.”

Key note speakers for the event are Deana Puccio, of The Rap Project and Berkeley student Sierra Brangman. Other presentations will be shared by individuals in the areas of education, social services, law enforcement, social media and child protective services.
