Once A Week Trash Collection To Continue

June 27, 2018

The once a week trash collection schedule is expected to continue to “at least year end”, Minister of Public Works Lt/Col David Burch said today, explaining that “we cannot contemplate a return to twice a week collection anytime soon with the limited vehicles available.”

Minister Burch noted that since the revised collection schedule was introduced earlier this year, Waste Management staff have been adequately coping and as such, they will not be hiring new staff at this time.

Minister Burch said “we have seen a levelling off in the amount of household waste collected when compared to last year’s twice a week schedule” and “concurrently we have seen a steady increase in those using the public drop off since the extension of operating hours on Saturday.”

The Minister continued, “One of the significant benefits of this new scheduling is the reliability factor and consistent collection of waste on the day scheduled.”

Added benefits the Minister noted included financial savings and less wear and tear on the vehicles.

  1. Question says:

The PLP: Doing less with more.

    • Pickled Tink says:

Will someone please change the protocol at Cupmatch and have someone other than the Governor give out the trophy so Burch will let us go back to twice a week trash collection!

      • Not Adding Up! says:

We should all dump our Trash at urchs house!

    • sandgrownan says:

LOL – the action man with no action. Apart from being a giant moron, he’s also absolutely useless.

      • Real talk says:

If I was you I would stop worrying about Burch and try to find out why so many of my people didn’t vote for you obaUBPErs last election. :)

        • Wahoo says:

Because plp had to deceive you? No busses, no jobs, no trash collection, absentee premier etc. You got tricked again because your emotion runs deeper than common sense. That is reality.

        • sandgrownan says:

I know the answer to that already.

  2. cpm says:

Have you seen the queues at Tynes Bay?
What are the pick up people doing with the other day?

    • Wahoo says:

They should be at Tynes Bay unloading cars to speed things up. Perhaps set up another drop off East and West the same thing.

  3. Mark says:

What?!? This is awful. Burch is absolutely terrible. Im gonna start dumping my garbage on his lawn.

  4. mixitup says:

Hush your mouths, the Americas Cup was worth it remember!

    • Question says:

      Irrelevant.

The $60m wasted on Grand Atlantic would solve a few problems thpugh wouldn’t it.

      • frank says:

Stop would you buy a house if certain people keep telling you the house will fall in the ocean but those same houses were safe for people to stay in during the AC Cup

        • Double S says:

You guys are rewriting history as per usual.

The Minister and Premier at the time overruled the BHC board who voted against this development as at the time (2009/9) the economy was tanking and so was the real estate market. After being overruled half of the BHC board resigned in protest. What they were charging for these places you could have bought a single family home with a yard. Instead the PLP were trying to sell $700k+ small apartments with no closets and no elevators to the third floors. The housing market was saturated and there wasn’t enough demand. The Government had no business entering the real estate market at that point in time.

It is all documented. Believe it or not the PLP is no infallible and not all screw ups are someone else’s fault.

Either way the AC Cup comparison is dopey at best. The tenants were there for 6 months at the most. Very disingenuous comparison. But not surprising that you would use such an argument and disregard the actual facts.

        • shrew says:

the $60m was a WASTE OUR TAX DOLLARS . and you and me paid for it. WAKE UP.

        • Question says:

PLP myth. They didn’t sell because they were expensive and ugly.

        • Bernell says:

Well you can’t really compare staying in a house for a year or two to making a half million dollar investment in a property.

    • Not Adding Up! says:

It was well worth it! in fact we got millions more dollars back in income then was spent. Bermuda was featured on most morning TV shows like Good Morning America, BBC and others. We were mentioned in every major travel magazine, newspaper, tv show or blog.

The same could not be said of the Beyonce Concert, Faith Based Tourism, Diaspora Tourism Campaign, 20/20 Cricket, PGA Golf or any of the other previous attempts. If I am wrong name one event that the PLP Government introduced in 14 years that did more.

      Is that crickets!

    • Wahoo says:

Cost overruns on Berkley, Port Royal, dockyard (plus thruster wall), Grand Fiasco and other “projects” did nothing for us. AC continues to pay for itself only an idiot could say otherwise….oh wait…

  5. wondering says:

If you fix the drop off point at the duo and you can get twice the amount of cars safely in there. A walkway OVER the normal car traffic would help

  6. More says:

    Called it.

  7. Warwick West says:

    OMG. What a surprise!
    NOT.

  8. So what says:

What the heck does America’s Cup have to do with trash pick up???Go ask the locals that made big money off of America’s Cup if it was worth it. Better yet research the audited financial figures that were posted. If you are capable of doing that. What has the current government accomplished to better you life?

    • mixitup says:

Don’t make me scroll all the way down here to tell you off…you must be ‘new’ to Bermuda if I have to explain why public services remain in shambles.

      • SMH says:

“you must be ‘new’ to Bermuda”

You must be another f’n idiot.

      • Wahoo says:

You must be new to Bermuda…..perhaps new to the planet. AC was an investment not some hairbrain project.

      • Question says:

The PLP. Raising taxes, cutting services. Can’t run the economy.

      • sandgrownan says:

incompetent civil servants and thew unions.

  9. Nana says:

Liar, liar, liar. But we all new that it was not going to end when said it would. What a man???.

  10. Real talk says:

    Omg…they done America Cup …forgot wifi in public schools….shall i go on…

  11. cpm says:

So once a week trash means less drivers and pick up people
170 Daily bus runs cancelled there must be a lot of civil servants sitting on their seats doing nothing
Can I apply for a job?

  12. Triangle Drifter says:

The UBP lost an election in no small part due to once a week trash pick up made into a huge issue by the PLP. The PLP does it & all we hear is the tree frogs. Where is the outrage? Where are the marches?

    • PBanks says:

Based on the outrage expressed in this thread, maybe it’ll come from that group?

  13. Concurrently we have higher fuel costs and more wear and tear on our vehicles …do to “necessative” toil and tribulation bestowed upon us by one day pick up.
Levelling off by definition is us necessitively removing trash so our wives ,children and pets don’t get bit by rats..
As they are dirty and carry disease.
No rabies so far but predictickle if not imminent .
This is the dark ages all over again!
Maybe we can do ancestry dot com and find a distant relative to the pied Piper…he could play his flute and lead awlll the rats into the ocean?
I think Danny Kay played him in a black and white movie…
    Till year end.
    I’ll try’n do my part…but fuel is almost $9.00 a litre now

  14. Wonder what Colon Powell would do….?

  15. Wambam says:

    Deja Vu ennit?
    Totally predictickle…
Surprise me and countless others please..
    .
    Fix this sitchination .

We really shouldn’t smell trash above Mama’s cookin.

  16. simple says:

what do they do since its only once a week pick up? one thing the plp like shafting the taxpayer its their legacy! but cant fix a wall for a club that has contributed more to the cummunity then the plp and oba put together

  17. Joe Bloggs says:

    How is this “news”?

  18. I smell a rat says:

I’m sick of this once a week pick up, I think it is absolutely ridiculous

  19. Realist says:

Too much cozying up with each. It will be impossible for the government and unions to get things done better.

  20. Paper onions says:

Methinks a very smelly island will be upon very soon – great for the tourists driving around on their bikes or twizy’s. The rats will be pleased and also my cat who is a great ratter.

  21. Toodle-oo says:

The once per week pickup wouldn’t be so bad if everyone did what they were supposed to on the morning of collection.
It’s beyond annoying to see people still putting their trash out on the now non-existent 2nd day . People who put their trash out too late and then leave it there for a week. People who are still stuck in a time warp and think that their trash will get collected the day after a public holiday as it once was a long time ago.
People who put their trash out the day (or more) before collection .

  22. Sammy says:

Burch your not looking at the big picture, you say your’e saving money. Sometimes you have to spend money to make it, if you didn’t know. The tourist come to Bermuda for it’s beauty and it’s people, beauty includes no trash as well. I am seeing more and more garbage bags lying on the side walks and in bushes since you started this a*s of a project, which has been long enough. Don’t wait until we get looked at in the wrong image. Go back to two day a week pickup. Keep Bermuda Beautiful

  23. facts of the rock says:

It’s time this fork tongued guy was removed from office.

  24. Mark says:

well I guess Vector Control will be very busy…I wonder how much more money they will have to spend and will it balance out the savings he talks about here? also, we will all have to live in squalor for a while but I bet Burch wont be suffering. Where should we put our garbage in the height of summer I wonder…

  25. PBanks says:

People appear to have short memories. The last year under twice-a-week pickup, we had backlogs up the wazoo. Trucks were getting run into the ground.

Until we get more trucks, or larger trucks, going back to twice-a-week is only going to frustrate people when their trash gets left out for weeks (esp if a holiday is approaching).

We just have to persevere for the time being, sad to say. Unless some entrepreneur is looking into a for-hire alternative for various neighborhood trash pickup, what else can be done?

    • Question says:

Actually, the backlogs and weeks with no trash pickup were also under Burch. He changed to once a week to “temporarily” solve the “temporary” problem.

And those small trash trucks? You can thank the PLP for those as well. They made a big deal about what a ‘clever’ idea they were, when they bought them.

As for what can be done, perhaps the government could spend less time buying themselves limos and increasing taxes on food, and more time being productive. Manage the civil service, maybe. Manage the public employees, maybe. Increase efficiency.

  26. drunken ursula says:

open up tynes bay on sundays at 7am like the other days…please!

    • Triangle Drifter says:

You can’t be serious. That would make far to much sense

  27. Bdabye says:

I wonder how the trash collectors themselves feel about this? They have to ride with trash that has now be sitting for a week as opposed to 3-4 days. I know my trash smells a lot stronger when I take it to the road.
Have any of you driven behind a trash truck in the summer lately?
My hat is off to the gentlemen who carry out this valuable service.
    I for one thank you.

  28. Sara says:

Anyone know why Spanish Point trash wasn’t picked up on the day is was supposed to be picked up? In addition they came around the next day but forgot to pick up our house. So now we will have 2 weeks since our last trash pick up provided they are back on schedule this week….

  29. gustav says:
