BFCA To Offer Goalkeeper Coach Courses

August 23, 2018

The Bermuda Football Coaches Association [BFCA] announced that it has been successful in negotiating with its coach education partner, The Scottish Football Association, to offer Goal Keeper Coaching Education to be held in Bermuda during the week of September 11-16, 2018

A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Football Coaches Association is pleased to announce that it has been successful in negotiating with its coach education partner, The Scottish Football Association, to offer Goal Keeper Coaching Education to be held in Bermuda during the week of September 11-16, 2018.

“This initiative is aimed toward developing specialist goal keeper coaches for the Bermuda Football Association affiliates and local football programs, and creating a pathway for specialist goalkeeper coaches to move towards obtaining the UEFA Goalkeeping A License through the Scottish FA.

“The BFCA have identified the goal keeper coach, and specific goal keeper coach education, as being a deficient area of technical training in Bermuda, and throughout the various programming levels of our football. The goal keeper is a specialist position in the team, and as such a goal keeper’s training fundamentally requires unique preparation and insight into the specifics of the positional techniques and their role within the play of the team.

Jim Stewart Bermuda August 2018

“The addition of Goal Keeper Coach Education has been a priority of the current administration’s platform from taking office at the last BFCA annual general meeting. With the Scottish FA due back on island in September to deliver the SFA Introductory course for the candidates preparing to travel to Scotland in October for the UEFA B license, we have been able to secure experienced goal keeper coach educator Jim Stewart to travel as a part of the staff and provide this opportunity to our local coaches.

“Jim Stewart worked as a youth GK coach for the SFA before he joined the Scotland national football team setup under Gordon Strachan in 2013 on a part time basis. Stewart spent 10 years as the goalkeeper coach at Rangers FC up until 2017, when he joined Nottingham Forest as the first team goal keeping coach. His coaching career has taken him to Kilmarnock and Hearts before joining Rangers in 2007, a role he held while also helping out on the international scene with the Scottish youth set up.

“He began his playing career at Kilmarnock, before spells at Middlesbrough and Rangers and he also earned two caps for Scotland. Jim has strong family ties within football with his sons; Colin Stewart is the manager at Kilwinning Rangers FC, Fraser Stewart is currently a goalkeeper at Whitletts Victoria FC, and Ross Stewart is a goalkeeper at Dalry Thistle FC.

SFA Level 1 and SFA Level 2 Goalkeeper Courses

“The BFCA will host the SFA Level 1 and Level 2 goalkeeper courses during the week of September 11-16, 2018.

“The Level 1 course aim and objective is to provide a basic introduction to the needs and demands of a goalkeeper and a goalkeeping coach. Focusing on the basic principles of the position and fundamental movement patterns of a goalkeeper incorporating the core skills and techniques of the position. It is targeted towards coaches who have an interest in developing young goalkeepers. There are no admission criteria or pre-requites as this is an entry level course.

“The Level 2 course aim and objective is designed to assist coaches, aged 18 or over, who develop goalkeepers. The course is based on five themes [shape, movement, positioning, distribution, and crossing] and is designed to give coaches the ability to coach the goalkeeper both technically and tactically via game related practices. It is aimed at goalkeeper coaches working in clubs and builds on the fundamentals learned in the Scottish FA Level 1 Goalkeeper Award. In order to be considered for the Scottish FA / Level 2 Goalkeeper Course, candidates must have completed the Scottish FA Level 1 Goalkeeper Course within the last 3 years, and also must complete the Children’s Wellbeing in Scottish Football online module [approx.. 45 mins].

Costs

“The BFCA will provide financial support for each of the BFA club affiliates to identify one candidate to enroll in these courses. This individual should be a coach currently helping or interested to deliver goalkeeper coaching within the club’s programs. The only financial requirement is the BFCA 2018-2019 membership dues of $75, that will make the coach eligible to participate in the upcoming BFCA AGM and receive membership benefits of continuing education courses, discounted course license fees, BFCA socials and participation in coaches forums.

“All participants will receive access to the Scottish FA Live LMS [Learning Management System], including all course notes and materials.
