300 Attendees Expected At BILTIR Conference

September 18, 2018

On Thursday, September 27, 2018, insurance executives from around the world will come to Bermuda for the fifth annual Bermuda International Life and Annuity Conference, hosted by the industry’s association of companies known as the Bermuda International Long Term Insurers and Reinsurers [BILTIR].

“With nearly 300 registered attendees expected, the event will be held at Fairmont Southampton and begins with a welcome reception on Wednesday evening in Hamilton where Premier David Burt will address the conference guests,” BILTIR said.

“Speakers at the event are leaders in their field and the keynote speaker is best-selling author, Neil Howe, a renowned authority on generations and demographic change. Howe is a recognized authority on today’s generations – who they are, what motivates them, and how they will shape the future. As a historian, economist, and demographer, he will bring a unique perspective to forecasting economic and social changes.”

Scott Selkirk, chair of BILTIR’s Strategy Committee and a primary organizer of the event, said: “Our Conference continues to grow year-over-year, which exemplifies the increasing interest in the risk solutions provided by Bermuda’s long term reinsurers.”

“We are very excited to have Neil How as our morning keynote speaker. Today’s developed economies face challenging headwinds from their aging demographic profiles.

“Howe’s presentation will highlight his unique framework for economic forecasting, that combines an understanding of generational context and the historical fundamentals that drive financial behavior. Conference participants will gain meaningful insight on mitigating risks and seizing opportunities presented by the inevitable challenges we all face. “

The BILTIR noted that “Bermuda has seen substantial growth of its long- term insurance sector in recent years, which now includes over 130 commercial reinsurance companies according to the Bermuda Monetary Authority’s latest annual report. These reinsurers help manage the risks associated with life insurance, annuity, disability, and long- term care policies.”

Wenda Roberts, BILTIR’s Corporate Administrator, said: “BILTIR represents a growing part of Bermuda’s economy, and the conference is an opportunity to highlight, to an international audience, the exciting developments that are happening here.”

“BILTIR also strives to make a positive impact in the local community. In addition to its efforts in coordinating volunteer tutoring for high school students and providing summer internships to returning college students, hosting a conference such as this adds over 150 room nights to the hotels on the island, and hopefully introduces Bermuda to future repeat visitors.”

The conference is sponsored by Athene Life Re Ltd., Marsh, LOGiQ3 Group, Aon Insurance Managers, EY, PwC Bermuda, and KPMG. Additional support has been given by supporting sponsors Bermuda Business Development Agency, Society of Actuaries, Willis Towers Watson, Andover Research Ltd., University of Waterloo, Conyers Dill & Pearman, and Expertise.

BILTIR was created in 2011 to serve as a formal association to represent life insurers and reinsurers in Bermuda. The organisation’s primary focus is to advocate for the island’s life and annuity industry. BILTIR members manage more than $280 billion in assets and insure a wide range of risk types across a broad geographic range, proving that they play an important role in the global economy.
