Global Entrepreneurship Week Starts Nov 12th

Global Entrepreneurship Week [GEW] Bermuda in partnership with the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation [BEDC], Department of ICT Policy and Innovation and Youth Entrepreneurship Initiative is gearing up to celebrate 2018 Global Entrepreneurship Week from Monday, November 12 to Friday, November 16.

A spokesperson said, “GEW is celebrated worldwide from November 12 -16, but as always, Bermuda has a month long calendar chock-full of exciting and inspiring events.

“GEW was launched in 2008 and has grown to include over 170 host countries, 30,000 partner organizations with thousands of activities planned throughout the world. Over the last five years, Bermuda has been recognized globally at the Global Entrepreneurship Congress with the Champion Catalyzer Award for most events hosted per capita – and this year there will be plenty on offer to get involved in.

“The month-long celebration of entrepreneurship will kick off tomorrow [Thursday, November 1] with the reading of the GEW Proclamation by the Minister of Economic Development and Tourism The Hon. Jamahl Simmons, JP, MP that will then be broadcast across television, radio and social media.

“On Friday, November 9, the public is invited to come out to celebrate and support local entrepreneurs at the GEW Entrepreneurship Festival from 5.30 p.m. – 8.30 p.m. on the grounds of the Cabinet Building. There will be entertainment, food and locally made products to discover during the family-friendly event.

“Other highlights of the month’s events include It’s A Family Affair – Family Business Event, which will take place on Friday, November 2 from 5.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. at Goslings Wine Cellar. The event will feature international guest speaker Ted Knowles of Northeastern University D’Amore-McKim School of Business, along with a panel of local business owners including Irvin Hendrickson of Hendy’s Laundromat, Denise Riviere of Bull’s Head Car Wash, Zach Moniz of Lindo’s Group of Companies and Charles Gosling of Goslings Ltd., who will share some of their insights on topics such as ‘I will never do that again’, ‘Things that keep you up at night’ and ‘This is how you do it’.

“Following on from last year’s successful awards ceremony, the Second Annual Small Business Awards will take place on Sunday, November 11 at Pier 6. The event will celebrate the island’s small businesses and entrepreneurs and the winners of the 2018 Small Business Awards will be revealed.

“The finals of the Rocket Pitch Competition are always an exciting time and this year will take place on Thursday, November 15 at AXA XL. Entrepreneurs from five categories, including Pitch Pink, Pitch Town, Pitch Tech, Pitch Green and Youth Pitch will battle it out to see whose idea will come out on top and win a share of the $25,000 start-up package of cash and services to help them launch their business.

“In celebration of Women’s Entrepreneurship Day, the Women’s Entrepreneurship Day Conference will be a day-long event featuring Stacey Ferreira, CEO of Forge, and Shelly Bell, founder of Black Girl Ventures Foundation. ‘Upgrade to SheEO’ at this event that will inspire, empower and elevate.

Jamillah Lodge, Information and Education Communications Officer for BEDC and GEW Project Manager, said, “Global Entrepreneurship Week is a time to celebrate, inspire and create new ideas to drive innovation and economic growth. In Bermuda, we have seen many entrepreneurs succeed and bring their vision to life, and we want to continue to inspire people to make their business ideas a reality. We encourage anyone interested in starting their own business, or those who just want to support small businesses and entrepreneurs, to come out and take part in the events put on during the month of November, and beyond.”
