Staff Volunteer Time To Clean Up Fort Hamilton
Employees of Marsh and Guy Carpenter yesterday participated in a volunteer clean-up at Fort Hamilton. The effort, coordinated with support from the City of Hamilton, is part of the companies’ larger initiative to give back to the Bermuda community.
Several weeks ago, 20 members of staff at Marsh and Guy Carpenter collected trash including cigarette butts, bottle caps and plastics, near Admiralty House in Spanish Point. In past years, Marsh and Guy Carpenter have hosted similar clean-ups at locations including Trunk Island, Horseshoe Bay and Albouy’s Point.
“We are excited to support our local communities and help preserve the beauty of Bermuda’s natural environment,” said Teniko Eve, co-chair of Marsh’s Corporate Social Responsibility [CSR] Committee.
“Each year we ask team members to recommend areas on the Island which might need some extra attention. Fort Hamilton was suggested by a colleague, Patricia Hollis, just a couple of weeks ago. For us, this is an easy way to take 90 minutes out of our work day to make a positive contribution to the community.
“Going forward, the hope is to host these Community Giving Days at least once a quarter. We look forward to providing our colleagues with as many opportunities as possible to participate. Marsh as a company has always prioritised giving back and continues to build a thriving philanthropic culture.”
The City of Hamilton applauded Marsh and Guy Carpenter for the community outreach and welcomed the efforts at Fort Hamilton. With its proximity to the road, the entrance to the Fort and the parking lot are vulnerable to litter as well as illegal and deliberate dumping. According to a spokesman, extra attention to these areas is necessary and very much appreciated.
Steven DeSilva, City Parks Superintendent, stated, “Fort Hamilton is a very special and historic place. We have staff on the grounds on a daily basis who do a fantastic job, but the areas leading up to the Fort attract unsightly litter and dumped objects, being so close to a busy thoroughfare.
“We’re grateful to Marsh and Guy Carpenter for identifying this area for their community clean-up and commend them for their commitment to the environment.”
