Motorcyclist Arrested After Striking Mother, Baby

December 16, 2018

A mother had to use her own body to shield her baby from the brunt of a fall after a motorcyclist struck them as they were exiting a vehicle in Pembroke, with the rider later arrested on suspicion of impaired driving.

Fortunately the baby did not sustain any injuries, however his mom did suffer a knee injury as she used her body to protect her 17-month-old son from harm, managing to hold on to her baby as they were both thrown to the ground.

A police spokesperson said, “Around 10:20pm Friday, December 14th police and fellow first responders were dispatched to a reported collision on Parsons Road in Pembroke.

“It appears that a community service van was stationary outside a residence on Parsons Road near the junction with The Glebe Road as the passengers, believed to be a 19-year-old Pembroke woman and her 17-month-old baby, were exiting the vehicle.

“Apparently at that time a motorcyclist traveling along Parsons Road attempted to maneuver between the community service vehicle and the kerb, striking the sliding door of the van as well as the 19-year-old mother holding her infant son, throwing both to the ground.

“However, the young mother was able to hold on to her baby and used her body to shield her infant son from the brunt of the fall.

“The motorcycle and rider – said to be a 24-year-old Pembroke man – then struck a wall, throwing the rider to the ground.

“The mother and her baby as well as the motorcycle rider were transported to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for medical assessment.

“It was subsequently confirmed that the baby did not sustain any injuries, while the 19-year-old woman suffered a knee injury and the 24-year-old man received treatment for non-life threatening injuries to his wrist and shoulder area. An update on his medical condition is anticipated in due course.

“The rider was later arrested on suspicion of impaired driving.

“The scene was processed by the relevant police personnel and inquiries continue. Any witnesses are asked to contact the main police telephone number 295-0011.”

    Just. Slow. Down.

This is more than a speeding issue. This is about continued (deliberate) reckless driving behaviour.

Firstly, thank God the baby was okay. And secondly, all you people with your “gotta slow down” on every story, just quit it already. It’s so old and lame and needs to stop. Speed had nothing to do with this here, it was plain stupidity that caused this. And our speed limit was set in the 40s before they had cars here and the 22mph limit was literally set for horse and carriages, because their top speed was 22mph. Yet, with the invention of cars, now with ABS and airbags and high tech safety, our island still deems a horse speed limit as suitable, which is completely unrealistic, childish, and utterly ludicrous, and a sign of a mind that does not work.

Why would a moron ride in the inside not even aware of what is going on with the van is pure idiotic. They should throw the book at the idiot.
