British Triathlete Tim Don To Coach Young People

February 19, 2019

Bermuda’s young people are invited to meet Britain’s 3 x Olympian, 4 x ITU World Champion and Ironman Tim Don, this weekend at the National Sports Centre. ‘

Mr Don will be a special guest at this year’s first World Triathlon Bermuda Kids Coaching Clinic, on Sunday, open to all children 7 years and older.

A spokesperson said, “Tim Don is perhaps most inspiring for the way he has overcome adversity. At the height of his career as the fastest Ironman triathlete of all time, a cycling crash left him with a broken neck just days before the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, where he was a favourite to win.

“The crash could have ended his career but he didn’t let it stop him. He wore a full ‘halo’ head brace for 3-months and worked his way back into competition. He produced an inspiring documentary – The Man with the Halo.”

“Bermuda’s school children can meet ‘The Don’ and benefit from his inspiration and coaching this Sunday February 24th at 11am at the National Sports Centre.

“This is the first of the World Triathlon Bermuda Kids Coaching Clinics starting this week and held every second Sunday from now until the MS Amlin World Triathlon in April.

“The sessions are to encourage more children to try the sport of triathlon, to provide practice in transition skills and to build confidence for racing. After Sunday, future clinics will be at 10am on Sunday March 10th, 24th, April 7th and 21st for approximately an hour each. Email for more information: kristen@robinson.bm

“The Sunday coaching is organised by the Bermuda Triathlon Association, to prepare young athletes for the RenaissanceRe Kids Duathlon on Friday April 26th. The Kids Duathlon will happen the day before the big event on Saturday April 27th, where Flora Duffy, Bermuda’s own World Champion and Commonwealth Games gold medallist, will compete again.”

WTSBDA spokesperson and BTA Chief Product and Experiences Development Officer Pat Phillip-Fairn said; “The RenaissanceRe Kids Duathlon is an important part of the World Triathlon Bermuda Festival Weekend.

“Last year more than 200 children raced on Front Street, experiencing the thrill of the ITU World Triathlon finish line. Since Flora Duffy’s outstanding 2018 performance there has been a surge of interest from Bermuda’s children in the sport, which is encouraging to see. We look forward to building on that this year.”

The MS Amlin World Triathlon 2019 will be hosted in Hamilton on April 27th, 2019. It is the second of three annual World Series Triathlon events that the island will host; in 2021 Bermuda will be home to the ITU Grand Final and Age Group World Championships.
