Hospital Implements Hand Hygiene Audit

March 25, 2019

Bermuda Hospitals Board’s [BHB] Infection Prevention and Control Department are working to increase public awareness of the importance of healthcare workers using good hand hygiene.

“A pilot project asking patients to report their observations will start in some BHB outpatient services 1 April 2019,” a spokesperson said.

“The hand hygiene survey will not be mandatory. Patients will be advised, by BHB Infection Prevention & Control staff, of the correct hand hygiene that staff should be using and then invited to take the anonymous survey.

“Hand hygiene is the most important measure in preventing the spread of infection. Studies have shown that making patients active participants in their care increases healthcare provider’s accountability and improves communication between the two.”
