Ministry: Short Delay In School Registration

March 26, 2019

“Parents and guardians of children entering preschool and P1 for the 2019/20 school year are advised that there has been a short delay in school registration,” the Ministry said today.

A Government spokesperson said, “This delay comes as a result of the need for the Ministry of Education and the Department of Education to look at further options due to low student enrolment.

  • “Enrolment letters for parents of incoming P1 students will be mailed on 28 March and 29 March, 2019. Parents are required to accept or decline offers of enrolment by 12 April, 2019.
  • “Enrolment letters for parents of preschool students will be mailed on 12 April, 2019. Parents are required to accept or decline offers of enrolment by 25 April , 2019.
  • “Parents of students entering middle and senior school will receive offers of enrolment following the Cambridge Checkpoint Examinations that take place from 18 April to 20 April, 2019.

“Parents with questions regarding enrolment can contact the Attendance and Registration Coordinator at 278-3300.

“The Department of Education extends a warm welcome to new families supporting the Bermuda Public School System, and encouragement to families who will be making the transition to middle and senior school.”

  1. Question says:

They cannot do a single thing right.

  2. MM says:

Could someone explain the term ” offer of enrollment ” when the law states children n must be in school , and even if we put aside for a brief minute what the law requires , experience says our children need to have a foundation in English math and social sciences.

    • JLP says:

It just means the offer of a place at a specific public school. If parents aren’t happy with the school they’ve been assigned, they can appeal to try to get placement at a different school. Some parents may also turn down the spot in favour of private school, or because they’ll be leaving the island.

So, we do this every year right? This ought to be a push button operation…although I see an issue…we have both a Dept. and a Ministry of Education. What are all these people doing, apart from, it seems, nothing?

This appears to show another decrease in Bermuda’s stats yet the PLP say and do nothing. Falling retail sales, falling population, falling tax on non Bermudians buying houses, and now falling numbers of school kids. In the real world, the latter should mean savings in the Ministry of Education, consolidation of schools and less maintenance meaning savings in the budget which can be significantly reduced. But this is Bermuda, so nothing will happen and more money will be spent
    and wasted.

Mailed? It’s about time this was systemised! By the time the mail shows up the deadline may have even passed.

  6. JLP says:

Enrollment letters were supposed to be mailed on March 8. I understand there can be delays for any number of reasons, but surely there should have been a statement from the Ministry long before now, almost 3wks past the original date. So the frustration with the “system” begins… We (parents of children about to enter public school) have been waiting to hear where our children will be placed in September, and already realize there has been a delay. The heading of this article should be “Longer Delay”.
